Before learning complex patterns and knitting techniques, you need to learn the basics of craftsmanship - in particular, learn how to hold the hook correctly.

Step 1
The crochet hook is the main tool of the knitter, and how comfortable it will be to knit and how easy it is to master new patterns depends on its correct position in your hand. Take the hook in your right hand and hold it the same way you hold a pencil or pen.
Step 2
Most hooks have a small flat area with a groove in the middle of the body, where you need to place the fingers that hold the hook. This section also contains numbers indicating the hook number. If you are left-handed, use the hook in a mirror-like manner, holding it in your left hand and placing your fingers in the same way on the flat indentation.
Step 3
Holding the crochet hook as well as a pen while writing will keep your hands comfortable when knitting. To make the first loop on the hook, make a regular connecting knot.
Step 4
To do this, at the end of the working thread, form a small loop, the end of which, coming from the ball of yarn, was located above the free end. Insert the hook into the loop from top to bottom and grab the working end with it, and then pull it through the loop formed.
Step 5
Tighten the knot slightly by pulling on both ends of the thread. The knot will tighten on the hook, and you can knit further, dialing in the chain of air loops.

In order for you to comfortably hold the thread when knitting, pass it between the fingers of your left hand and constantly pull the thread evenly, wrapping it around the little finger of your free hand. Place the connecting knot between your index finger and thumb.
Step 7
You can also pass the thread between your fingers without winding it around the little finger, but providing an even tension. Guide the hook with your right hand under the thread and then over the thread. Crochet the taut working thread and form a new loop by pulling the thread through the previous loop.
