The bullfinch costume is not much different from the carnival outfit of any other bird. But this plump, cheerful red-breasted bird has its own characteristics. This applies primarily to dyeing, so when making a suit, special attention should be paid to the choice of fabrics.
What material to sew from?
Take a close look at the picture of the bullfinch. This bird has a bluish-gray back, bright pink or red chest, a light underside of the abdomen and a dark head with a small black beak. You can pre-make a sketch of the future carnival dress. Are there some items of clothing you already have in your wardrobe? You need:
- wide white or beige pants;
- blue, grayish blue or black shirt;
- a piece of black, dark blue or gray fabric;
- a piece of bright pink fabric.
If you have to sew everything, then it is better to make the pants from a thin opaque fabric that drapes well. Flannel or satin are suitable for the top, beanie and wings. For the breast, it is better to take thin jersey. As for the pattern, any pattern of loose trousers (like pajamas or oriental ones) is suitable for the pants, and for the top - the main pattern of the dress, which must be shortened. For a hat, you need a cap pattern, consisting of a middle part and two sidewalls.
The cap is needed the same as for a newborn, but the pattern, of course, needs to be increased.
Breast
Sew pants and shirt. It is better to make a shirt that will be zipped at the back with a short zipper. For the breast, cut out an oval. If it turns out to be a little uneven, it doesn't matter. Fold it over the edge to the wrong side and press the fold. Make cuts in several places on the allowance, leaving 2 mm before the fold. This is necessary so that the part does not bristle. Baste the breast, then stitch with matching threads very close to the edge.
You can make the top of the suit in a different way - the back and sleeves are sewn from dark material, the shelf is from hot pink.
Wings
An important part of the bird's costume is the wings. If you are sewing a bullfinch costume for a girl, you can make them from a long scarf to match the sleeves. The scarf should be long enough to be draped over the shoulders and ending at the fingertips. Find the middle, sew the needle forward and make large gathers. Sew the short edges with the same seam, gather tightly and make loops that will fit over the middle fingers.
The wings can be swept in a few stitches to the back under the zipper, but you don't have to. There will be a boy with a bullfinch, make the wings in the form of long triangles of fabric, sew short edges to the neckline, laying them in assemblies. Sew eyelets to sharp corners.
Beak hat
Sew a tie cap. Cut a triangle out of fabric or matching leather. Baste the beak so that the tip is exactly in the middle of the forehead, and then sew. It is better to make a hat with ties.
