The correct tuning of the guitar is largely dependent on the correct positioning of the strings on the neck, which lie on two saddles, the top and bottom. The distance between the saddles determines the length of the string and is called the scale of the guitar.

Instructions

Step 1

When making saddles, be aware that the top is near the headstock on the top of the guitar. The tuning of the strings and the resonance of the instrument depend on it. The saddle rests on the guitar body stand. Usually, factory tools do not differ in the correct device of the nut. Therefore, in order for the guitar to sound beautiful and to be able to tune correctly, you will have to make the nut yourself.

Step 2

Select the material for making the sills. You can use: metal, brass or nickel (polishes well, the strings resonate and sound great, but the material is difficult to work with); graphite (soft self-lubricating material, affordable, easy to process, the strings sound even, chamber); artificial stone Corian (hard material, synthetics, commercially available, obedient in processing, the strings give an even balanced sound); bone (a traditional hard material for an instrument, requires careful processing, the strings sound clean, bright).

Step 3

Perhaps the bone nut is the most preferred for all types of guitars. Although blanks for the nut can be purchased at music stores, the bone nut will have to be made by yourself. Keep in mind that processing bones is not a very pleasant procedure, and it also smells like a lot.

Step 4

Buy a whole beef tibia with a joint from a store or slaughterhouse. Do not buy bone that has already been chopped, as cracks are inevitable during chopping.

Step 5

Saw off the bone on both sides with a metal hacksaw, leaving 10 cm in the center.

Step 6

Get rid of hollow bone contents and superficial debris from skin and meat. Saw the bone in half lengthwise into two pieces, and saw out the porous areas. Wash the workpiece with detergent, scrape off the soft parts of the flesh. To get rid of excess fat, boil the bone in boiling water (bring to a boil, cool, remove and dry in the shade).

Step 7

Saw out blanks for sills in the form of small elongated parallelepipeds. Saddle: Length equals fretboard width + 1mm on each side; thickness - 5-7 mm; the height is equal to the thickness of the pad + 2 mm. The dimensions of the saddle will have to be established experimentally or based on the factory version, but without cuts for the strings.
