There is no greater joy for any author than seeing his work in print. And not in electronic form on some of the many literary sites, but in a real paper magazine, collection or almanac. And every novice writer, finishing his first story, already dreams of picking up the author's copy of the publication, still smelling of ink. But the main difficulty here is not so much to write as to print your work.
Instructions
Step 1
So you've written your first talented story and are now looking for how and where to publish it. The first thing you should remember is that modern publishing houses are not very willing to accept the so-called "small forms", which include stories, stories, essays. They can take a full-fledged novel with much greater interest. However, this is not at all a reason to give up your own creativity. Fiction stories are regularly published in various specialized and literary magazines. Therefore, you can refer to them first.
Step 2
Before you bring your manuscript to the publishing house of the magazine, pay attention to the correspondence of its subject to the genre of your work. There are a number of "serious" literary magazines that specialize in everyday and genre prose. For example, these are "Neva", "New Dawn", "Foreign Literature" and the like. If you write stories in the genre of modern or historical prose, you may well be able to try your luck at these publishers.
Step 3
But if you specialize in science fiction or fantasy, then in such publications you obviously have nothing to do. For stories in the genre of science fiction, fantasy, cyber-punk, popular science magazines (Science and Life, Technology of Youth, Threshold, Ural Pathfinder, etc.) and various fanzines are much better suited. If you are dominated by cyber-punk, it makes sense to contact the editorial office of one of the computer magazines.
Step 4
You can contact the publisher either in person, by appearing or by calling there, or by e-mail. In both cases, you can find the necessary contacts in any published magazine. If the magazine is not at hand or you intend to contact several editions at once, use the Internet. Today, all self-respecting publishers have their own official sites on the network, so finding them will not be difficult by simply typing a query with the name of the magazine into a search engine.
Step 5
On the website of the publishing house, carefully review all the contacts presented there and find among them the department for the reception and selection of manuscripts. If there is none, look for the contact phone number of the executive secretary. If you intend to take your manuscript in person, take care to make a printout in advance and write the electronic version on a flash drive. Be sure to add your contacts to both the electronic file and the paper version of your story: full name, real postal address, E-mail, phone number.
Step 6
When personally giving the manuscript to the editor, find out how long the materials are considered in a particular publisher. Ask for a contact phone number and specify the time after which you can find out about the results of the review. If you are sending your story by email, be sure to call the secretary or editor the next day to see if they received your letter. After these steps, please be patient. You will have to wait for the result from two weeks to, in some cases, several months. In case of a favorable decision, you will receive a letter from the editor with his comments and suggestions.
