A frosty winter day, a day off and you decided to go out of town, taking your beloved dog with you. Or maybe you have two, or three? Then why not try a dog sled ride? Just remember, not every dog can be sled, not everyone can tolerate cold well and are able to pull a large load, northern huskies are best suited for this.
Instructions
Step 1
Make a lightweight wooden sled (sled) The sled is two to four meters long, depending on how you want to use it. If you just run around a little on a day off with your only beloved dog, then of course small sledges will be enough, your dog may not be able to carry the big ones. The width between the runners is 55–75 cm, the width of the runners themselves is 10–14 cm. Insert bars (3-4 pieces) into the runners, 50 cm high, make grooves in the middle and insert the cross bars, fastening both halves of the sled. Attach an arc to the front ends of the runners, pull the horns of which to the first pair of vertical bars. Put longitudinal planks on the cross ties, which will rest in an arc. Tie all parts of the sled with straps. If you are looking to buy a ready-made sled, go for a sturdy, lightweight wooden sled.
Step 2
Take a long leather belt or strong rope 2 -2.5 cm thick. This will be the center towing strap (in the north, this strap is called "pull"). its length depends on how many dogs you plan to harness. Usually, one to fourteen dogs are put in a team. One dog can carry no more than 40-50 kg of cargo. The strains are tied to a sled. Dogs are harnessed to the pull from both sides. Usually dogs are placed in pairs, with a pull on both sides. It must be remembered that the leader of the pack is placed in the first, leading pair. Dogs must be well trained and obedient to the owner (musher), as he cannot control the dogs only with the help of commands.
Step 3
Make a harness for a dog from soft leather straps 4 - 4, 5 cm wide. If the straps are thinner, they will crash into the body of the dogs under the weight of the load. The harness is a loop that is put on the dog over the head on the chest and fixed around the body, supported by back straps. The end of the harness is on the side of the dog and is attached to the traction. All parts are fastened together with carabiners, which makes it possible in the cold, without removing gloves or mittens, to put on and take off the harness from the dog. Harnesses are sold in stores, but they are a little different, but if you find more or less suitable, you can buy and improve. Put on the harnesses on the dogs, harness to the pull … Have a nice rest!
