Ship modeling is a fun and rewarding hobby. In the course of working on a copy of the ship, many skills are acquired, patience is developed. After finishing work, the modeller has the opportunity to admire the fruits of his labor for many years.
It is necessary
- - model drawing;
- - materials: plywood, cardboard, veneer, slats, brass, paints, glue;
- - tools: jigsaw, drill, lathe;
Instructions
Step 1
Find a drawing from which you will create a model of the ship - for example, on the Internet. Transfer the details of the ship kit to the tracing paper, scale them to the desired size if necessary. Using transfer paper, transfer the kit drawings to 3-4mm plywood. Saw out the parts with a jigsaw, process them. Then connect with PVA glue. You will receive the body of the future model without casing.
Step 2
The cladding can be made of different materials - for example, thin quality cardboard or veneer. Glue the strips of sheathing with glue, make sure that it does not sag between the frames, forming waves. For this reason, it is better to use two rows of diagonal sheathing in a criss-cross pattern. The case will turn out to be more rigid and durable.
Step 3
After assembling the case, immediately make a stand for it. Further assembly of the model will be much more convenient, you will visually see how your ship is being born. Lay the deck, set up the masts. Do everything very carefully, do not allow negligence - upon close examination, an experienced eye will notice all your flaws. The quality of modeling is determined by the accuracy and depth of elaboration of all details.
Step 4
If your ship has cannon armament, you will have to master the basics of turning. All guns are made from brass or bronze rods, this is the best material. You can also carve them out of plastic, then paint them with bronze paint, but the result will be much worse.
Step 5
You will have to grind many other details on a lathe. The material is usually wood. You can build a simple lathe yourself, using an electric drill or a sewing machine drive as a basis (it is more convenient because it has a speed control pedal). There are always a lot of chiseled parts on a sailing ship model, so it will be difficult to do without a lathe.
Step 6
Pay special attention to the rigging. Choose threads for him in such a color and weaving that they match the original as best as possible. When sewing sails, try to do without a sewing machine, as the machine stitch is immediately visible and spoils the whole impression of the model. Choose the material for the sails carefully too, it should evoke authenticity. Work very carefully on the flags.
Step 7
Coloring plays an important role in the creation of a model. For a wooden ship model, the best color is natural stained wood. It can be obtained by lubricating the skin and other wooden parts with a solution of potassium permanganate or iodine. Cover the painted surface with a matt varnish. Art varnishes give a good result, they can be purchased in stores for artists. You can also buy oil or acrylic paints there.
Step 8
Models of sailing ships are usually not designed for sailing on water, they have a completely different task - to please the eye. That is why materials can be any, including those that are afraid of water, but the quality of the parts made with them must be impeccable.
