In the first half of the 40s of the XX century, in the process of searching for synthetic substitutes for rubber, an organosilicon polymer with interesting properties was created. A toy made from it, called hendgum, or hand gum, can be crumpled and stretched. A ball of this material spreads across the table in a puddle, but bounces off the wall if thrown. At home, you can make a material similar in properties to the polymer from which hendgum is made.

It is necessary

  • For the first way:
  • - PVA glue;
  • - sodium tetraborate in glycerin (borax in glycerin);
  • - dye.
  • For the second way:
  • - silicate glue;
  • - 96% ethyl alcohol.

Instructions

Step 1

One of the most famous homemade handgum recipes involves the use of PVA glue and borax in glycerin. Pour a package of PVA stationery glue into a glass or glass jar. If you want to get a colored gum for your hands, touch up the glue with a little gouache. Mix PVA and dye vigorously with a wooden stick. An unpainted handgum will be white.

Step 2

Pour a small amount of sodium tetraborate in glycerin into a container. This liquid, which has antiseptic properties, can be found at the pharmacy. The consistency of the future hand gum depends on the amount of antiseptic: the more sodium tetraborate is added to the glue, the more liquid the result will be.

Step 3

Use a wooden stick to mix sodium tetraborate with glue. After a few minutes, the resulting mass will begin to thicken. Wrap it around the stirrer and remove it from the container.

Step 4

If the substance has become dense before you have had time to completely combine the components, transfer the future hendgam to a plastic bag and knead it with your hands. The chewing gum made according to this recipe for hands does not leave stains, freely separates from the objects on which it lies, and the ball rolled from it spreads over the surface. However, unlike the original toy, homemade hand gum is not durable.

Step 5

Handgum can be made from silicate glue and ethyl alcohol. Pour the glue into a deep container and add no more than one fifth of the amount of alcohol used. If you pour in too much alcohol, you will immediately get a solid, fragile substance, and therefore add the second component drop by drop.

Step 6

When the liquid in the container starts to cloud, stir it with a wooden stick. White flakes will begin to appear in the solution. Stir the glue and alcohol vigorously and wait until almost all of the mixture is solid. Remove the flakes from the container and remove the remaining liquid from them by squeezing the resulting substance. Such a handgam will retain its properties for several hours.
