Many needlewomen love ribbon embroidery. Unlike other types of embroidery, here you can quickly see the result of your efforts. And the products embroidered with ribbons look impressive and expressive.
Lesson number 1. The choice of materials for embroidery
Pick up ribbons. For embroidery in this technique, silk ribbons of different widths are suitable, as well as organza ribbons, which will add airiness and volume to the pattern. In addition, gold and silver metallized threads, various braids, lace and embroidery threads such as floss are used.
You can embroider with ribbons on matting, cambric, muslin, linen, silk and woolen fabrics, that is, on almost any material. However, there is a condition - the fabric must be strong and elastic enough so that a needle with a ribbon can freely pass through it. For beginner needlewomen, it is recommended to perform the first work on the canvas, which is used for cross stitching.
The correct needle must be selected. Its eye should be large enough for the ribbon to pass freely, and the needle itself should be long enough. On sale in handicraft stores you can find special needles for embroidery with ribbons.
Darning, tapestry or gypsy needles are perfect for embroidery with ribbons.
You will need a hoop. If you are embroidering on lightweight fabrics that are deformed, tape the hoop around the hoop, and when the hoop is fully wrapped, secure the ends of the tape with a few stitches.
Lesson number 2. How to transfer a drawing to fabric
There are several ways to translate a picture. The easiest one is to use a special copy paper to transfer the design to the fabric. Lay the fabric on a flat surface, then copy paper on it and the third layer - the embroidery pattern. Now feel free to trace the pattern along the contour, it will be printed on the fabric.
The disadvantage of this method is that traces may remain in the most inappropriate places. Of course, you can get rid of them simply by washing the product, but if you want to embroider on a thin fabric, it is better to choose another method.
Another option is to use tracing paper or tissue paper, which is pretty simple and quick. Transfer the drawing to tracing paper, remember it slightly, pin it to the main fabric and hoop with it. Do the embroidery on tracing paper, and then carefully remove it. Thus, not a single trace will remain on the fabric.
Lesson number 3. How to sew stitches
Cut the tape 50 cm long, insert it into the needle, bend the tip a couple of millimeters and drive the needle into it. Support the ribbon with one hand, and with the other, pull the needle through the tip and tie a knot.
Ribbon embroidery can be done with stitches that are used in different techniques. This is a chain seam, a needle forward, a chain stitch, a French knot, eyelets, elongated stitches, and so on. By combining all these stitches, you can achieve a beautiful composition.
