It is necessary

Cardboard, paper, calico or gauze, awl, thread, PVA glue, clamps

Instructions

Step 1

In order to restore a book that is falling apart into separate sheets, it is best to collect a hardcover for it. Before that, collect all the sheets by page numbers. Often books are collected from groups of separate notebooks, in this case, each of them should be stitched with threads through new holes that can be pierced with an awl.

Step 2

For the base of the cover, cut out the cardboard: two crusts, equal in width to the sheets of the book, in height - 8 mm more. The width of the spine should be equal to the thickness of the book block, the height should be the same as for the first two parts. From paper of a suitable color, cut out a sheet according to the following parameters: spine width, 8 and 8 mm indent on the sides, width of two cover sheets + 3 cm horizontally and vertically allowance.

Step 3

Outline the paper, as shown in the photo, coat the cardboard with glue, put it on the markings. Put a rectangle of wrapping paper covered with glue on top of the spine, go around the allowances of the lining paper inward, where necessary, grease with more glue. Set aside until the glue is completely dry, pressing down with a weight to avoid wrinkles from shrinking.

Step 4

Now carefully and accurately align the stack of stitched notebooks of the book, press down with a weight on the edge of the table so as to glue the outside of the folds. Having smeared it with glue, apply a piece of gauze or calico, smooth it to the end, coat it again with glue and apply a strip of canvas, leave to dry. The allowances of the gauze must remain free to adhere the endpapers. Glue folded and fitted sheets of endpapers made of thick Whatman paper with glue 5 mm at the fold, attach the books to the block, glue over the top with gauze allowances and clamp everything in a clamp until dry.

Step 5

The next day, put a layer of PVA on the inside of the cover, glue a book block with endpapers into it. To prevent excess glue from staining the visible areas of your book, tuck the sheets of paper inward into the front and back endpapers, but briefly so that they do not dry out. Then remove them, and wipe the book along the ends of the fresh gluing and leave to dry completely.
