Straw weaving is one of the oldest crafts. Amulets, toys, kitchen utensils, hats, handbags, interior items and much more were woven from this material.
It is necessary
- - sickle;
- - a sharp knife;
- - damp cloth;
- - a needle;
- - strong threads.
Instructions
Step 1
Straw of various cereals is suitable for weaving: wheat, oats, barley, rye. It can be harvested from mid-summer to harvest. The material collected at different times will be in different shades from green to dark yellow.
Step 2
Use a sickle to cut the stems at the very base, the longer they are, the better. Tie the straw into bundles and dry.
Step 3
Prepare the weaving material. Clean the straw, remove all knots. Cut the stems in half. Sort the straws by length.
Step 4
Dry straw is very fragile, and nothing will work out of such material. To give it elasticity, soak it in boiling water for a few minutes. Leave the right amount to start braiding and wrap the rest of the straw in a damp cloth.
Step 5
A feature of weaving from straw is that you need to first prepare plaits or plaits, from which you can subsequently weave things of the most diverse shapes. For simple weaving, the straw needs to be flattened. Use a knife to split the straw and straighten it with a slightly heated iron.
Step 6
Prepare a ribbon for a simple weave. Place several straws (their number depends on the size of the product) vertically next to each other.
Step 7
Take a straw and twist it around the base in a checkerboard pattern, that is, first over the straw, then under the next, then put it back on the straw and stretch it under the next, etc.
Step 8
Weave the second row in the same way, but where the working straw passed under the base, place it on top, and where on top of the base, stretch it under it. Fit the straws tightly to each other so that there are no gaps between them. Place the finished braid under the press and dry.
Step 9
A wide variety of products can be made from braids. Depending on their type, the method of sewing the braids is chosen. If you want to weave a rug or mat, use a butt stitch.
Step 10
To do this, take the prepared braid and sew the edges of the tape, hooking them alternately with a needle and thread, and pull together. Weaving can start from the center and arrange the braid in a spiral or sew ribbons from straw in rows butt-to-end.
Step 11
If you want to make a hat, lampshade, tray, dish or other complex object. Sew the ribbons in a spiral, starting from the middle of the garment. Put each next row a little on the previous one by 1/3 of the width of the braid and sew. Iron the finished product through a damp cloth.
