It is customary to call edging the tight edge of the braid, which is sewn into the edge of the product or directly into the seam. Such a braid is used for the manufacture of clothes, shoes, various textile items. It not only serves as a decorative function, but also serves to strengthen the seams and process the edges of products. There are several ways to sew the piping, depending on its application.

It is necessary

  • - Threads;
  • - scissors;
  • - sewing machine;
  • - ready-made tape for edging / cord;
  • - oblique strip or braid.

Instructions

Step 1

Make the piping yourself. Bend the braid or oblique strip in half lengthwise. Insert the cord inside and press it against the fold of the fabric. Stitch the fold along the length of the cord using the One Sided Zipper Foot. You can also make a flat edging. In this case, you do not need a cord.

Step 2

If you want to sew a raised piping, then baste it face to face on the allowance so that the tight edge of the tape or piping is on the part of the product next to the basting seam. Cut the braid at the corners until it tightens. Sew the piping as close to the seal as possible using the same foot. Then sew the cut pieces together face to face with pins.

Step 3

If you want to release piping on the collar or neckline, trim the seam allowances close to the stitching. Turn the collar inside out and turn the facing seam inside out. Tack the edges so that the piping is nicely released. Iron the edge. Next, stitch to the edge.

Step 4

If you are faced with the task of processing the edges with edging, then it is important to take into account that when making a homemade edging, the open sections of the bias tape must be processed with an overcast seam. Turning with edging is a fairly quick and uncomplicated way of processing neck cuts, armholes of sleeves and sides of products.

Step 5

Pin the piping tape face to face into the cuts. In this case, the sealed edge should be close to the basting seam. Sew the piping close to where it will be sealed. Be careful and carefully cut the seam allowance.

Step 6

Sweep piping on the seamy side. The sealed edge should protrude beyond the edge of the part. Stitch the very extreme cut of the product from the front side with a seam to the edge next to the seam with which the edging was stitched. In some cases, the braid can be left unstuck. To do this, iron the bias tape folded in half and baste it on the extreme cut so that the fold of the tape protrudes to the desired width.
