Prescribing a drum kit and percussion instruments, they are also colloquially "drums" or "rhythm section" - in the sequencer or microphones - requires approximately the same actions. They can be written at the same time, or in several passes.

Instructions

Step 1

First of all, distribute the tracks (or channels on the mixer) and assign basic effects. In separate mono tracks, select the kick drum, "snare" (aka snare drum), hi-hat. It is important to remember that a special low-frequency microphone connected to the compressor is assigned to the kick when recording "live", therefore, the sound characteristics in the sequencer should be simulated with a special low-frequency compression plug-in. The live compressor in the sequencer is assigned to the snare drum. The hi-hat should sound a little dry and listenable, so no special processing before mixing. Allocate two stereo tracks to cymbals and toms. Assign an equalizer to the cymbals, highlighting the bands 1200-1300 and 2300-2500 Hz. An important detail: instruments played directly with palms / fists / fingers (including tom-toms) are included in the mixer through the preamps (on the sequencer, the preamp effect is simulated by the corresponding plug-in). Further, for the sequencer and "live recording" a little differently. On the mixer, assign a stereo pair of "air" microphones plus one mic to each instrument with pronounced frequencies above 500 Hz. On the sequencer, "air" will be organized a little later by assigning a reverb; therefore, assign a track to each treble instrument.

Step 2

For ease of use, connect all drums to a dedicated subgroup of the mixer or sequencer. Assign reverb to the entire subgroup in the sequencer. Live, on the mixer, we prescribe all the drums as is; you can add reverb later in the mixing stage.

Step 3

Directly prescribe drums in several passes in the following sequence. The barrel is prescribed first. Behind her is a "worker", only a rhythmic basis without "breaks" - interruptions. Add the hi-hat and cymbals in the third pass. The fourth is volume-volumes. And finally, write down the necessary interruptions - "breaks" and other syncopations.. You should register the percussion after the whole drum kit is registered.
