Step 1
Select the poems that you would like to put to music. Almost any poem can become a text for a song, but those who tried to write music to verses must have noticed that some of the lyrics seem to be created for songs, and some stubbornly do not want to lie on the melody. This is if we talk about those poems that were not originally written as lyrics. This is explained quite simply - poetry is largely built on the laws of music, and some verses are more melodic and simple in rhythm, and some are less. In any case, you can choose the poem that you like, you just have to suffer with some.
Step 2
Read the poem from beginning to end several times. Perhaps, after that, the desired melody will immediately come to you, and if not, you will at least feel the rhythm, mood, dynamics of the text - the music should be in harmony with the sound of the text, “move” in the same way as the text “moves”.
Step 3
Ideal if you own any musical instrument - guitar, piano, etc. It may even be African drums - unusual but interesting. Try to play a few chords, think about what key the song will be in. Sing the words of the poem, try to feel what melody would suit them. An important point is to record all your attempts on a dictaphone. Melodies have one bad property - they can fly out of your head very quickly, and you will lose a good song forever.

If you do not own musical instruments, try simply humming a melody, making sure to record your attempts on a dictaphone.
Step 5
Songwriting can take five minutes, or it can take days, weeks or months. Be patient and don't stop until the song feels complete. At the end of the work, you can ask someone from your friends or acquaintances to listen to your work and ask for help with the arrangement and vocals.
