Often, when sewing various products, problems arise with the edge, if the fabric is "frayed" (for example, satin and velvet), or when the fabric is very thin (silk, taffeta or organza). To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to process the edge of the product.
Instructions
Step 1
It is best to overlock the edge of the fabric. Use a narrow hem or three-strand overlock for this purpose. If you do not have this function on your sewing machine, then you can do without it. For example, you can fold the edge of the fabric twice half a centimeter and carefully iron the fold. If the fabric does not make it possible to immediately fold the edge in this way, then you can first wrap it once, sew, then repeat the procedure.
Step 2
Another way of processing the edge is with a bias tape. To do this, take a strip about three centimeters wide. Its length should be several centimeters longer than the edge of the fabric to be treated. First you need to cut off the excess fabric closer to the stitching. Then you need to sew along the fold line with short stitches. If the fabric is stretched, iron it with an iron. After that, fold the fabric over to the wrong side so as to close the still untreated cut, place an edge pad under the hem. Then place the stitching at the same distance from the edge.
Step 3
When processing a capricious knitted fabric, there are also difficulties. Knitwear can be processed with a bias tape, or with a simple hem. To do this, you need to lay a line one and a half centimeters from the edge of the fabric. Lead the line from the edge to the center. Care must be taken that the thread does not tighten the fabric, does not wrinkle it. Then fold the edge over and overlock it.
Step 4
Knitwear can also be shanked. To do this, you need to sew the fabric along the line along which the stitching will be. Tuck the allowance and overlock. Fold the prepared strip of fabric (its width is two to three centimeters) in half in length. Stretching slightly, sew it right side to the right side of the garment. Then stitch along the front side, turning the tape inside out.
Step 5
Sometimes the model does not provide for threading. Especially on lightweight, translucent fabrics such as organza and taffeta. In this case, you can try scorching the edges with a lighter or candle.
Step 6
You can also use colorless nail polish. It will not let the fabric crumble, it will fix the edges, and at the same time it will not be noticeable even on white silk.
