Slings come in different types, and all of them, with some sewing skills, can be made independently. The most versatile and at the same time the easiest to sew is a sling scarf.
Instructions
Step 1
A sling scarf is a long strip of fabric 70 cm wide. Its length differs depending on the size of the parent's clothes that the sling will wear. In this case, it is always better to take fabrics with a margin, since the free ends of the sling will not interfere with either walking or winding - they can be tucked in or tied with a bow. The standard length of the sling-scarf is 5 m, it is suitable for everyone who wears clothes up to size 50 inclusive. To accurately determine the length of the sling, there is a special formula: 0 is assigned to the Russian clothing size, the resulting number is the required length of the fabric for the sling. For size 46, 460 cm of fabric is enough, for size 54 you need 540 cm.
Step 2
It is recommended to sew slings from natural fabric, and it tends to shrink after washing. Therefore, it would be more correct to take the width of 75-80 cm, and the length is also 5-10 cm more than necessary. Before starting cutting and sewing, it makes sense to wash the purchased fabric. As with the rest of the slings, it is best to choose non-stretch fabric. In length, the fabric should not stretch at all, but may stretch slightly in width. In this case, an obligatory property of the fabric is its plasticity, which further reduces the list of suitable ones. The best option is twill weave and jacquard fabrics. In these fabrics, despite their great strength, the threads move relatively freely during use of the fabric. This movement is necessary for a good fit, so that the fabric does not cut into the wearer's shoulders and repeats the contours of the bodies of both the child and the person carrying him.
Step 3
If you can't find a twill or jacquard weave, a plain, plain weave or even knitwear will do. But at the same time, the threads should not be located too tightly on the fabric, the fabric should be loose and soft. Ordinary coarse calico for a sling will not work well, as it will cut into the shoulders and rub - this is a very dense fabric. Slippery fabrics, nylon, satin, satin should not be used in any case. It will be difficult to tie a sling made of such fabric, and to untie it later will be even more difficult. You can use semi-woolen fabrics and fleece for winter and off-season wear. The fabric should match the wardrobe and the general style of the adult wearing it, therefore, children's fabrics in cheerful colors can only be taken for wearing at home, on the street they will look strange and ridiculous.
Step 4
If the fabric for the scarf is a one-piece piece, then to wear the sling, the edges are simply processed around the perimeter, and the sling scarf is ready to wear. You can process the edges by folding the fabric once or twice, sewing the tape on the edge, or using an overlock. Its ends can be made straight or rounded. If the sling scarf is sewn from several pieces of fabric, each seam must be carefully processed with a double stitch. The strength of the seams should be periodically checked during wearing, making sure that they have not begun to diverge, since the safety of the child depends on this.
