A self-portrait is an image of a person in graphics, painting or sculpture, made by the author himself. Looking at a self-portrait, others can understand how a person sees himself, because often this perception differs from the vision of the people around him. Having analyzed a self-portrait, an experienced psychologist can understand what complexes a person has, what doubts torment him, therefore, many psychological tests are based on this technique.

Instructions
Step 1
The first thing that will be required in order to paint a self-portrait is a mirror. You can also use some photo you like, but then you will get a simple copy of the image.
The mirror helps you not only to evaluate your appearance from the side, but also to see the image on a plane, that is, in perspective.
Step 2
The basic principles of depicting a self-portrait do not differ from the principles of creating a portrait, because the meaning remains the same - we are drawing a person. But you should not be content with only external similarity, you also need to convey some psychological characteristics, and the correct compositional arrangement of the image will help to do this. It includes the ratio of the size of body parts, their location on the sheet, background, environment, and of course facial expressions.
Step 3
Having thought out the content and composition of your work, proceed to the layout of the sheet. Later, when you gain experience, you can skip this step, since you will already see and feel the markup, but at the beginning of your artistic practice, it will help you keep the correct proportions of the image.
Step 4
Draw a vertical line in the middle of the sheet. This is the center of your drawing, along this axis the main image will be built.
Step 5
Then, constantly looking in the mirror, apply short horizontal strokes, marking the top of the head, bottom of the chin, and neck. If you are drawing more than just the face, mark the length of the torso, arms and legs.
Step 6
Then break the marked areas into smaller pieces. For example, you marked the top and bottom of the head.
Now draw the line of the eyebrows, eyes, cheekbones, the tip of the nose, lips, and the upper and lower border of the ears.
Do the same with each marked part.
Step 7
The next step will be the markup, which will indicate the width of your body parts. On the horizontal lines you drew, put bold dots corresponding to the width of your head, ears, eyes, bridge of the nose, wings of the nose, lips, chin.
Step 8
Next, start drawing body parts. Using soft, light strokes, outline the circumference of the head, forehead, curl of the eyebrows, eyes, nose and mouth. Then carefully work out all the shadows, and your self-portrait will become more voluminous.
Step 9
Now remove the markings, paint in all the details and fill your self-portrait with color if necessary. It remains only to add a background and interior, if you do not want to be limited to the image of only yourself.
