Many anglers love winter fishing, but such fishing is impossible without a quality ice screw. It is needed in order to drill a hole in ice. The success of the catch largely depends on the quality of the instrument, therefore, its choice must be approached with all seriousness.
What are the ice screws
Ice augers are very diverse. They differ from each other in different parameters, such as domestic or imported production, length, diameter and thread of an ice screw, manual or with an electric drive. How can you choose the one you need in such a variety?
You need to choose depending on the size of the fish that will be caught. If the fish is small, weighing up to 1 kg, such as perch, roach, smelt, then an ice screw with a small diameter - 100 mm is suitable, imported manufacturers have boers with an even smaller diameter - 70-90 mm. Such units are used by sports anglers, since the smaller the diameter, the faster and easier it is to drill a hole.
The universal diameter of an ice screw is 110-115 mm. Almost any fish will fit into a hole of this size. And the effort for drilling will not have to be made very much, as when drilling with an ice ax with a diameter of 100 mm.
Ice augers of 130 mm are suitable for a fisherman who can purchase only one unit. It will be more difficult to drill, but any fish, both small and quite large, for example bream up to 2 kg or pike perch, will fit into a hole with such a diameter. Diameters of 150 mm or more are suitable for very large fish such as pike or large bream. Drilling with such ice axes is a very laborious process.
Units are manual, screw and electric drives. Hand drills are on the same step with the small crowbars used to make ice holes. Auger more advanced, have a rod along its axis. They are more modern and practical to use than conventional hand-held ones, but large fish may not make it into such a hole.
Electric ice augers allow you to drill large holes, but they are quite expensive in terms of size and weight, they are distinguished by their massiveness.
Verified firms
Among domestic ice augers, it is worth highlighting such companies as the Barnaul drills "Tonar" and "Piterskiy" ice drills. They are much cheaper than imported ones and, with careful handling, are in no way inferior to them.
Among foreign companies, it is worth noting Mora and Rapala. Ice augers of the Swedish company Mora have different characteristics from the diameter to the height of the auger and even the drill itself. The Finnish company Rapala has only two types of ice screws. They differ from others in that they have removable cutting heads. Boers of this company are convenient in transportation, as they fold in half, unlike other imported ones.
Domestic units are affordable in price and maintenance. Imported ones are of the best quality, but their blades cannot be sharpened independently, and cutting heads can cost about 30-40% of the total cost of the drill itself. It is worth not forgetting that in skillful hands and with proper handling, ice augers can serve for an equally long time, regardless of the price and the company.
