The fashion motto of the 50s is femininity. A tight bodice, a wide fluffy skirt to mid-calf, light delicate fabrics - women seemed to be airy and unearthly creatures. A dress in the style of the 50s is still relevant today.
Making a pattern
To sew a dress or suit in the style of the 60s, you need the basic pattern of the dress - more precisely, the upper part of it. The skirt is cut directly onto the fabric. It is better to choose the simplest style - a fitted bodice with a long back zipper, a semicircular neckline, a short sleeve. When you made the basic pattern, you were already taking measurements. But for now, you will need a few more:
- the total length of the product;
- skirt length from waist to bottom;
- waist circumference;
- the length of the sleeve.
Cut the patterns of the shelf and back along the waistline (the waist grooves are divided exactly in half). On the sleeve template, mark the length of this part, draw a straight line parallel to the bottom line. The pattern for the top is ready.
The dress can be long-sleeved, and even without sleeves at all - the styles were very different. In the latter case, you need to slightly widen the armhole.
Choosing a material
You can sew a beautiful dress for summer in the style of the 50s from any fabric. It is better to choose the material that was popular in those years - silk, staple, satin. The calculation of the fabric depends on the width of the cut and on whether your dress will have a sun or half-sun skirt. For the top and sleeves with a cut width greater than the full chest girth, you will need 1 length, plus a few centimeters for processing. For a sun skirt you need 4 of its lengths, for a half-sun - 2.
A dress in the style of the 60s can be made from two types of fabric, making the top from one fabric and the sleeves and a skirt from the other.
Cut open
New cotton fabric should be washed or ironed through a damp cloth before cutting. It is more convenient to cut a piece. Leave one piece for the shelf, back and sleeves, the other for the skirt. Fold the section for the skirt in half along the length. Find the midpoint of the fold line and mark. Draw 2 semicircles centered at this point. The radius of one is equal to the waist circumference divided by 6, 28, the radius of the second is to this measure with the length of the skirt added to it. Don't forget to add a couple of centimeters to the bottom. Above, you also need to leave an allowance. To prevent the dress from being tight, the allowance must be cut in 3-4 places. Fold the piece for the top and sleeves in half along the same length. Align the middle of the shelf with the fold, place the details of the back and sleeves next to it. Mark the control points on the armhole and okat, they are on any correctly made pattern. Trace the details along the contour, and then again, adding 1 cm on each side for the seams. By the way, in the photo of those years, you could see a variety of sleeves. The flashlight was especially popular.
The sun skirt can be with a seam. You can also make a dress with a full length, from the back of the head almost to the line of the hips, this was also very fashionable.
Assembling the dress
Sweep and sew all grooves. Bounce shoulder and side seams. Try on the bodice, adjust if necessary, then grind the seams. Sew the sleeve ridge with a basting stitch or sew on a typewriter with large stitches. A simple sleeve can be hemmed immediately. Sew the sleeve into the armhole, aligning the control points. Try on the bodice again. Trim the neckline with a trim tape. Further actions depend on the length of the lightning. If it is very long and grips the top of the skirt, sweep and stitch the bottom and top of the dress, then sew in the zipper. If the zipper ends at the waistline or even higher, you can sew it in first, and only then attach the skirt. The last stage is processing the bottom. Fold it in 0, 5, and 1 cm and hem with a blind stitch.
