Aromatic oils are produced by distillation and can be quite expensive. After reading these instructions, you can make your own fragrance oil at home. The homemade oil won't be as concentrated as the ones on the market, but you will end up with a pretty good fragrance oil that can be added to a fragrance blend or used as a soothing body oil.
It is necessary
- Base oil (sunflower, almond, olive)
- Fresh flowers / herbs
- Glass container with lid
- Plastic bag
- Wooden hammer / rolling pin
- Gauze
Instructions
Step 1
Pick flowers and herbs in the morning when the concentration of essential oils is highest. Choose herbs that are about to bloom, because once they start blooming, the concentration of oils is significantly reduced. Check the collected flowers and herbs for any signs of insect damage. Rinse the plants with clean water and pat dry with a paper towel. Place one cup of herbs or flowers in a plastic bag and remember them with a small hammer or rolling pin to release the oil.
Step 2
Prepare a jar with at least 1 cup of good base oil. Many people prefer to use olive oil, but any vegetable oil will work as well. Almond oil will give your aroma oil a light scent that complements almost any natural scent. It also works great as a skin oil.
Step 3
Add mashed flowers or herbs to a jar of base oil and close tightly. Insist the oil in a warm room for 24 to 48 hours. Be careful not to expose the oil to direct sunlight during the day, as this will quickly heat the oil and it will lose some of its properties. Open the jar and strain the oil through a piece of cheesecloth. Discard the used plants, and pour the strained oil back into the bottle.
Step 4
Repeat the above procedure at least 3 more times until the oil reaches the desired aroma intensity. Pour ready-made fragrance oils into dark bottles to prevent sunlight from entering, or store the oil in a dark place. Add the oil to scent mixes, or use it as a body oil.
