Instructions

Step 1

For mixing colors, you can take any paints, but acrylic paints are the most convenient at the initial stage. Choose a paint set that includes the following colors: white, black, blue, red, cyan, yellow, and magenta. Black can also be obtained by mixing others, however the combination of these colors is quite complex and requires a lot of experience to get real black. Therefore, it is better to use it ready-made.

Step 2

To obtain new colors with the help of paints, certain combinations are used. There are three so-called primary colors: yellow, magenta, and cyan. Their combinations give colors called secondary: cyan + yellow = green, cyan + magenta = blue, magenta + yellow = red. Different combinations of primary colors can give any other hue, while the primary colors themselves cannot be derived from others. Combinations of secondary can give the same options as combinations of primary, but they will be much darker, because secondary colors are less reflective.

Step 3

Any color obtained by mixing paints can be lightened, for this it is necessary to add white paint to it. If you want to get a light shade as a result of mixing, add a little white paint to your main (primary) color.

Step 4

The resulting color can also be darkened by adding a little black paint. In some cases, to obtain darker tones, shades located at opposite ends of the CMY color wheel (circle of continuous color transition) are used. For example, green is used to shade magenta.

Step 5

By adding white and black at the same time, you can get muted or greyish tones. Their combination can add saturation to the primary colors. For example, if you mix black with yellow, you get olive green. By adding a little white to the resulting color, you will lighten it, giving it brightness. Thus, you can get many shades of different colors, you just need to control the dosage of black and white.

Step 6

To get black, the three primary colors (yellow, magenta, and cyan) must be evenly mixed. Another way to get black is by mixing two colors located on opposite sides of the CMY color wheel. The only dye that shouldn't be present when making black is white. Adding it will whiten the color, instead of black, you will get dark shades of gray.
