If you have become or are going to become the owner of a diamond, of course, the first thing you need to do is to clarify the issue of the authenticity of this gem. Unfortunately, the modern market is flooded with clever synthetic counterfeits, which can often only be identified by specialists. But it is also possible to test a diamond at home if you use several scientifically based methods.

It is necessary

  • - water
  • - glass
  • - Nitric acid
  • - magnifier or microscope

Instructions

Step 1

Submerge your stone in water. A real diamond will not "dissolve" in a liquid, but will sparkle. But a fake, due to optical illusion, will turn into a dull spot or completely disappear from the field of view. However, this method is not effective for all artificial diamonds. If doubts still remain, hydrochloric acid can be used instead of water. Taking all precautions, place a stone in it, and then pull out and inspect. There will be no marks or damage on a real diamond.

Step 2

Take a loupe with a powerful, at least 10x, magnification, or a microscope. Examine the gemstone carefully for the presence of natural rock inclusions in it. If your diamond is not artificial, but natural, then most likely they will be in it.

Step 3

Place the diamond under a homemade quartz lamp. In ultraviolet rays, the stone should glow with a pale bluish, pink, lilac or yellow color. If the color of the stone is bright and white, most likely you have a fake in front of you. However, it must be remembered that not all diamonds glow the same, so this test method can misfire.
