The rangefinder is used to determine the distance to an object that cannot be approached close. It can be a ship standing in a raid, a distant structure, a fortification of a real or game enemy. There are laser and optical rangefinders on the market, but they are quite expensive. The principle of operation of absolutely all rangefinders is based on measuring the angles to the base line. The rangefinder can be made by hand. This will provide an opportunity to get not only the device itself, but also geodetic skills.

It is necessary

  • - aluminum or iron strips:

Step 1

Take a straight, flat wooden plank. You can use a regular long ruler. Clip it to another board. The base must be level, solid and stable. Draw a baseline from one end of the ruler. It can be 50-100 cm long. The larger it is, the higher the distance measurement accuracy will be.

Step 2

Make 2 identical sighting lines. They are wooden rulers. At their ends, flies and slots are attached to the type of weapons. They can be made in the form of plates or squares of iron or aluminum. Screw them to the ends of the rulers with screws

Make axial holes exactly in the middle of the sighting lines. Attach the rulers to the ends of the measured area. In this case, one viewfinder must be installed rigidly, strictly at a right angle. Fix the second sight so that it can rotate around the axis in the horizontal plane with some friction

Step 4

Rotate the base of the rangefinder so that the stationary sight is precisely aimed at the object you want. Aim the same as if you were aiming with a gun. Rotate the second sight, aim it at the same object. Measure the angle between the reference line and the axis of the second sight. You got a right-angled triangle, in which the leg is known - the base segment, as well as the angle adjacent to it. Using the tangent theorem, find the second leg, which will be the distance to the object. In practice, it is inconvenient to solve this mathematical problem every time. Therefore, provide the movable leg with a pointer, and on the base draw an arcuate scale with divisions that will immediately indicate the distance. This scale can be both calculated and calibrated by existing objects, the distance to which is known.

Step 5

Telescopes can be used as sighting devices. They can also be home-made, from ordinary spectacle lenses. Make crosshairs on them like scopes. Laser pointers are also suitable as sighting devices. Attach one to a fixed ruler, the other to a rotating one.
