Childhood
Claudette Lily Chauschuan was born in 1903 in the French town of Saint-Mendais in Ile-de-France on September 13. In the family of her parents, banker Georges Claude and pastry chef Jeanne Lowe Shoshuan, there was already a child, son Charles.
The family emigrated to the United States in 1906. The girl graduated from Washington High School. Alice Rossiter, a speech teacher, helped her get rid of her foreign accent.
It was she who invited the fourteen-year-old pupil to participate in the audition for the production at the theater. This is how Claudette got her debut role in the play Widow Veil.
After school, the future famous actress began her studies in the League of Students, while working part-time in a clothing store to pay for her tuition.
At the same time, the girl was seriously thinking about becoming a fashion designer. After attending lectures by playwright Anne Morrison, she decided to focus on her acting career.
The path to the heights
Morrison offered the student a role in one of his productions called "The Wild Wescotts." The play was shown on the Broadway stage in 1923. Claudette performed there under her real name.
She began to use the stage name only in 1925. Colbert Claudette was named for a reason. This was the name of the actress's maternal grandmother.
From the time of constant work in the twenties on the Broadway stage, the perception of the girl as a professional actress began. During the Great Depression, American theaters were closed.
Claudette decided to start filming a movie. In the beginning, cinematography was silent. The era of sound pictures began much later.
For a long time, the girl's brother Charles Wendling acted as the sister's agent and her manager. Claudette has collaborated with Paramount Pictures.
A little time passed, and the future star managed to gain recognition. She has become one of the most sought-after American actresses.
Deserved recognition
In 1935, Colbert was awarded an Oscar for his work in the comedy film It Happened One Night. Then the nominee refused to attend the award ceremony, since she had no confidence in receiving the prestigious award.

The actress lived with him for thirty-three years until the sudden death of Pressman in 1968 from liver cancer. Three years later, the celebrity's brother also died.
After the death of her husband, Colbert left the set and left the stage. She spent the remaining years in the Barbados town of Speistown. Claudette died at the age of ninety-two on July 30, 1996.
