Biography and filmography

Sophie Nelisse was born in 2000 in the provincial Canadian town of Windsor. She became the second child in the family of an engineer and an English teacher. Her younger sister, Isabelle Nelisse, is also a successful young actress who has starred in cult horror films such as Mama, Waiting for Helen and It.

Sophie's parents repeatedly took Sophie to various auditions in commercials, so working on the set is natural and familiar to her. Thanks to her work in advertising, at the age of 10 she got a serious role - she was offered to play the schoolgirl Alice in the film "Mr. Lazar".

After the success in her debut film, the young actress began to be offered roles in local TV shows. Over the next 3 years, she took part in 4 Canadian projects, but they were not known outside the country, they were not even translated into other languages.

Sophie Nelisse demonstrated a completely new level of acting skills in the war drama The Book Thief (2013), which spread the actress's fame beyond the borders of her native country. For this role, she was nominated for the prestigious Saturn Film Award, but did not win it, and was also honored in the Critics' Choice Award for Best Young Actress.

The next leading role she got in 2014 in the family comedy "The Magnificent Gilly Hopkins". In subsequent years, she repeatedly took part in films of various genres: in the dramas Endorphin and 1:54, the thriller Cruel Dreams, the military melodrama The Chronicles of Love.

Personal life

Since childhood, Sophie has been involved in artistic gymnastics and dreamed of getting a gold medal in the Olympic Games. Even after the young Canadian became a very popular actress, she continued to study in a sports class and play sports. However, life prospects after the success in the cinema have changed somewhat: the actress now wants to conquer not the Olympics, but prestigious film awards, like the Oscars.

The young Canadian actress prepares very responsibly for each of her roles. To get a feel for the emotions that thieves experience during the theft, she even stole several books from a nearby store. Of course, the girl's mother later paid for each stolen item, but the girl achieved her goal. She understood how to behave in scenes with thefts, so in the movie "The Thief of Books" she plays as naturally as possible. It is worth noting that the actress understands that stealing is an unworthy act, which she has repeatedly reported to the press. So Sophie was glad when Mom returned all the money to the bookstore.

Nelisse is very fond of reading, and devotes a significant part of her free time from filming to this occupation. Most of all she likes crime stories with an unexpected outcome, but she reads all literary genres.
