Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a survival horror game developed by Frictional Games. The name translates as "Amnesia: Dark Descent", but localizers decided to call it "Amnesia: Ghost of the Past", as usual, distorting everything for the sake of dubious beauty. After playing Amnesia, people often wonder if there is something similar, games in the same style.
Monstrum
Mounstrum is a new game developed by Scottish rookie studio Junkfish. The release is scheduled for 2014, the month has not yet been specified. Visually, the game is very similar to Amnesia, also horror and survival. The first creepy trailer is already on the net.
The essence of the game is as follows. The protagonist woke up on some kind of huge ship. Everything around looks abandoned, deserted. There is no crew or passengers around. The developers tried to create an atmosphere of oppressiveness, as if invisible evil forces were somewhere nearby. In the trailer, a monster with a terrifying roar is chasing the player, but we have not yet been allowed to see it - an intrigue.
Like Amnesia, there is no way to fight or resist. You can only hide and run. The creators hint that the creature can somehow be fooled for a while and this is something completely new.
There is also information that when you play the game again, some of the ship's rooms will change their location. An inattentive player can fall into an instant and deadly trap. In a word, an interesting and exciting story, high-quality graphics and vivid emotions are waiting for you.
Outlast
The protagonist in this game is a journalist who decided to investigate some terrible events in the Mount Massive mental hospital. A video camera is at your disposal. You can use it to illuminate especially dark areas for yourself, and that's it. As in Amnesia, you cannot kill anyone here, just run and hide. All actions of the game will take place in the premises of the psychiatric hospital and, possibly, in its very immediate vicinity.
At his own peril and risk, the guy made his way inside and he no longer has a way back. Only forward, as they say. Outlast is recognized by some groups of people as one of the scariest games of the genre's history. Decent graphics, great gameplay. Better not to play it for too long at night, without good lighting. By the way, an add-on for this game has recently been released. Continuation of the story, significantly expanding the number of game hours.
Penumbra series
Frictional Games has created not only Amnesia, but a very similar series of games called Penumbra. This is a younger game, but no less elegant, dark, atmospheric. You are offered to solve a riddle that stretches over three parts. Subtle rustles, darkness, the sounds of some drops and whispers play on the nerves.
The story begins quite simply. The protagonist receives a letter from his long-lost father, he begins to unravel the chain of evidence and this leads him to snowy Greenland. Having hired some kind of fishing boat, he moored alone to the shore, got into a snowstorm, got stuck there among the snow.
A little later, in despair, he began to wander among the impenetrable blizzard, came across some strange hatch. This is where all events begin, in this strange, dilapidated bunker. Emotions are added by the fact that the exit due to the decayed structure failed - you only need to move forward, there is no turning back.
Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
We cannot fail to mention the most anticipated horror of 2013. This game is something new, although it has the same name, here we will talk about the adventures of the entrepreneur Oswald. A sort of mixture of horror, steampunk, horror and many more interesting things. The main character fell ill for a long time and while he was delirious, he saw some strange machine, which in the future will turn out to be real. For a while, it will seem to you that all events are paranoid madness. The story itself will tighten, intrigue and not let go until the very end.
Among the Sleep
You are offered to play with the most ordinary little child of two years old. The developers tried to convey all his feelings and impressions correctly: the most familiar things seem somehow huge. You will not have to plunge into all the horror and horror right away, at first your mom will take care of you for a while, you will play with a new gift - a teddy bear, and so on. There is also some immersion in realism, for example, the child cannot distinguish the inscriptions, so you see some squiggles instead of them.
At night, the world changes, mom disappears somewhere and you have to follow mysterious tracks. Suddenly, the house turns from a friendly and familiar into an ominous, full of anxiety, dangerous. The main goal of the game is to go through a very scary and eerie house that has suddenly grown to an unprecedented size. Of course, a two-year-old character cannot resist night monsters, so it doesn't hurt to be more careful.
The work with sound deserves special praise. The sound here complements the atmosphere, the familiar sounds of a hissing TV, dripping water, squeaking doors and wind noise outside the window are mixed with some terrible sighs, thunderclaps, bells ringing, etc.
Conclusion
In addition to these games, there are older ones, for example, Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi. It is already less similar to those listed above, but there are similarities. If you are not embarrassed by a little outdated graphics, but want to be imbued with excellent gameplay and feel incredible horror, then try it. Worthy of attention is the game Deadlight, quite new, but already praised by everyone. For lovers of something completely unusual: try the game Slender: The Eight Pages.
