Empire is a style in architecture, fine and decorative arts that arose in France in the first third of the 19th century. The style is characterized by solemnity, strict forms, richness of materials used. Surprisingly, the formality and coldness of the Empire style, in the art of couturier, combined with the romantic idea of returning to natural simplicity. This is how the Empire-style dress appeared - a version of the ancient Greek sleeveless tunic, intercepted under the bust with braid.
It is necessary
- - fabric of your choice: crepe de chine, taffeta, jersey;
- - elastic tape;
- - ribbon for decoration.
Instructions
Step 1
Take the necessary measurements. Measure the bust, the distance from the beginning of the neck to the point under the bust where the bodice will end, the distance from this point to where the dress will end: knee, mid-calf or ankle.
Step 2
Choose a material. Almost any fabric is suitable for this style: flying and soft is good for a summer dress, silk and taffeta for a formal outfit, jersey for a casual option. Use a stretch fabric if you are planning a dress with a tight bodice.
Step 3
Make a pattern. Draw a rectangle with a width equal to the girth under the bust plus 10 cm and a length corresponding to the length of the bodice. Draw a rectangle of the main panel with a width corresponding to twice the width under the bust and the length measured for the main panel.
Step 4
Cut out rectangles for the bodice and body from the fabric of your choice. Remember to add seam allowances. Hem the bottom edge of the main panel, gather the top edge to the width of the bodice (chest coverage plus 10 cm), sew the bodice and bottom of the dress, process the seam.
Step 5
Fold the dress in half lengthwise, measure the bodice neckline, for example, V-shaped, to the desired depth and width. Cut out a triangle on the neckline. Then cut a small amount of fabric from the opposite edge of the bodice (top of the back of the dress) so that in the middle the depth of the cut is 2 cm and fades out to the straps of the dress. When carving out the neckline, be sure to leave 1.5 cm for cutting.
Step 6
Sew the elastic tape from the inside out along the seam between the bodice and the bottom panel. Finish the cuts of the neckline and top of the back. Fold the dress in half lengthways with the wrong side out and sew a longitudinal seam along the back of the dress, and finish the seam.
Step 7
Decorate the dress with satin or any other ribbon that suits the fabric of your choice. Simply tie the ribbon with a bow, or fold and stitch the bow, and attach the ribbon with a few stitches to the dress.
