The patchwork technique appeared in Europe at the beginning of the 18th century. At this time, thrifty craftswomen collected all kinds of scraps and sewed the necessary household items from the bottom. Nowadays, scraps are used to sew not only things that are necessary for the household, but also cute accessories, including bags.
Materials and tools
Choose the correct color for the flaps. They can be monochromatic in a contrasting color, or you can combine fabrics with floral and graphic prints, as long as they are in the same color scheme.
In addition to scraps for making a bag, you will need: - adhesive non-woven fabric; - synthetic winterizer; - lining fabric; - oblique inlay; - threads; - tailor's pins; - scissors; - sewing machine.
The technology of making a bag from rags
Make a template. Draw a 4x4 cm square on a sheet of thick paper (the value may vary depending on the desired size of the elements). Then draw another square with sides 5x5 cm, stepping back one centimeter from the sides of the first element. That is, you should get 2 squares, one inside the second. Cut the part along the outlines of the larger and smaller squares.
Place the blank against the fabric and trace around the inside and outside. Cut only along the contours of the larger square, while the line of the smaller one will subsequently need to be stitched. This is necessary in order for the shreds to turn out perfectly even. Make 15-20 similar parts.
Find the best combination. Spread the shreds out on a flat surface, swap them several times to achieve the best composition. Take 2 pieces from the first row, fold them right sides together and sew along the marked line, then sew the next piece to them, and so on to the end of the row. Iron all seam allowances carefully. Sew the details of the remaining rows in the same way.
Next, fold the long pieces of the first and second row and grind them. Iron the seam. Attach the block of the next row and stitch it into the workpiece. Make the canvas for the second side of the bag in the same way.
To keep the future product in shape, duplicate the pieces from the patches with adhesive interlining. Cut a piece of the same size out of it, attach it to the wrong side and iron it with an iron. Cut out similar parts from a padding polyester, attach rectangles to the seamy side of the patchwork, pin along the cuts with tailor's pins and quilt along the seam seams along and across the part.
Align the sections and sew them with a bias inlay to match the main shade. For the side and bottom of the bag, cut out a rectangle 0.6 m long and 10 cm wide. Duplicate the material with a padding polyester. From the lining fabric, make 2 equal pieces of 30x20 cm.
Attach the side piece to the main piece of shreds and sew to the bias tape. Sew on the other side of the bag in the same way. Fold the lining parts right side in, stitch on three sides and place in the bag.
Trim the top edge of the garment and sew a bias tape over it. Sew 2 pieces for the handles of the desired size. Attach them to the front of the bag and sew.
The patchwork bag is bright, so there is no need to decorate it additionally. But if you wish, you can decorate the accessory with large flat buttons or glue the applique.
