Jack Albertson is an American actor, comedian and singer best known for his roles in The Adventures of Poseidon and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
Biography
Jack Albertson was born in Massachusetts to the family of Flora Coaft and Leopald Albertson, who immigrated from the Russian Empire. In addition to him, the family already had the eldest daughter, Mabel, who also became an actress. Not finishing school, Jack Albertson dropped out and moved to New York, where he was going to start a career in show business. At first, he had a hard time making ends meet, and the future actor sometimes spent the night either in the subway or on a bench in Central Park. The first serious work in his life was participation in the road troupe of vaudeville artists, where he performed dance numbers.
He soon got a job in one of the burlesque shows, where he performed in a comedy duet with actor Phil Silvers. Thanks to these performances, Jack Albertson got to Broadway, where his acting career began to develop rapidly.
Career
In the late 1930s, the actor made his debut on the big screen, starring in more than 30 films later. One of his first film roles was in the film Miracle on 34th Street (1947), where Albertson played the postman. Significant success came to him in the 1950s, when he became active in television.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Albertson appeared in a number of successful films, including The Kissing Cousins (1964), The Hired Worker (1964), Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) and The Poseidon Adventure. (1972). In 1964, the actor was awarded a Tony Award for his role in the Broadway musical If Not For Roses, and four years later he appeared in its adaptation, the role in which earned him an Oscar in the nomination for Best Supporting Actor. At the same time, Albertson continued a successful career in television, where in 1974 he won an Emmy for his role in the series Chico and the Man.

Personal life
In 1952, Jack Albertson married, his wife's name is June Wallace Thompson, and soon the couple had a child - a girl named Maura.
last years of life
In 1978, the actor was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, but despite this he continued to actively act in films. He played one of his last roles in the horror film Dead and Buried. Jack Albertson passed away in November 1981 in Hollywood at the age of 74. A year later, his sister, actress Mabel Albertson, was gone. They were both cremated and their ashes scattered over the Pacific Ocean.
His contribution to the development of American television has been marked with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
