Unlike porous materials such as drywall and wood, smooth surfaces that repel moisture, such as glass and porcelain, are difficult to paint. Since the paint does not absorb into such a surface and rolls off, it is very difficult to draw a drawing. These complications can be avoided by not using regular paint.

1. Buy glass paints in the colors you need for your drawing. If you want a transparent design on glass, you will need transparent glass paints for this effect. If you are going to paint a glass or porcelain plate that you will use and wash, make sure the plate can be placed in a kiln and choose a special firing paint that is more durable than regular glass paint.

2. Place the stencil on the glass or porcelain surface you want to paint. Although it is possible to do without a stencil, it will be difficult for beginners, because paint can peel off if applied very thickly with a regular brush.

3. Dip a sponge in glass paint, remove any excess paint on the surface of the sponge. Press the sponge against the exposed surface of the crockery that shows through the stencil. You need to press lightly so that the paint from the sponge does not smear outside the stencil.

4. Apply as many coats of paint as necessary to achieve the desired effect. Allow the previous coat to dry well before applying the next coat.

5. If you have used firing paint, place your painted glass or porcelain utensils in the oven. Each paint manufacturer has its own recommendations on how best to do this, so read the instructions carefully.
