A soft and warm envelope is a practical thing for a baby. It is very comfortable to sleep in, especially when walking in the fresh air. And mom will not have to constantly adjust the blanket.
Yarn selection and tools required
Choose yarn for knitting an envelope. It should be soft, not prickly and hypoallergenic. Acrylic threads meet all these requirements. Although made from synthetic fibers, they are great for knitting baby clothes.
To tie an envelope, you will need:
- 2 skeins of acrylic yarn of medium thickness (100 g each);
- a detachable zipper with a length of 54 cm;
- 4 buttons;
- knitting needles No. 3-3, 5;
- hook 3-3.5 mm;
- a needle with a large eye.
To knit an envelope, choose the simplest patterns, because if you knit a product with openwork knitting, the envelope will not turn out very warm. If you decorate it with braids, aranas or other textured knitting, it will be inconvenient for the baby to sleep in it. The most suitable patterns will be pearl, garter stitches and "rice".
Knitting the back half
Cast on 64 stitches, knit 4 rows of garter stitch. Next, knit 4 holes for the hinges. To do this, knit 14 loops, close 3 loops, knit 10 loops, close 3 loops again. Repeat 3 times to the end of the row and knit the remaining 11 sts.
In the next row, in place of the closed 3 loops, make 3 air loops each. Next, include them in the pattern and knit with garter stitch. Knit 42 rows with this pattern and at a height of 11 cm from the typesetting row, switch to knitting with another knitting, for example, rice or pearl.
Knit in the selected pattern 42 cm from the last row of garter stitch. Next, close for armholes 8 loops on both sides of the part. Then knit 12 cm straight. Close all the loops when the back half of the envelope is 62 cm.
Knitting the front halves of the envelope
Cast on 32 sts and knit 42 cm in rice pattern or pearl stitch. Then for the armhole, close 8 loops on the right side of the part and knit 6 cm straight. At the same time, at a height of 48 cm from the typesetting row, cut the neckline. To do this, close 8 loops from the left edge, then in each 2nd row close 3 loops 1 time, 2 times 2, 1 time 1 loop. When knit 54 cm from the bottom of the piece, close all remaining shoulder loops. Knit the second shelf in the same way, symmetrically to the first part.
Knitting sleeves and hood
Sew the shoulder seams with a needle-forward stitch. Cast on 52 loops along the edge of the armholes and knit with the selected pattern, while subtracting one loop on both sides of the sleeves in each 4th row. After knitting 20 cm of details, finish knitting and close the remaining 36 loops.
For the hood, cast on 90 loops around the neckline and knit further with the main pattern. When you knit 17 cm, close all the loops of the part.
Assembling the envelope
Fold the envelope with the right side inward. Sew the sleeve seams and sew the sides of the envelope and then the top of the hood.
Crochet the edges of the shelves, where the fastener will be located, and crochet the bottom of the sleeves with "rachis step" columns. Sew the zipper into the shelves, sew 4 flat buttons for the fastener, placing them exactly opposite the loops on the placket.
