An anemometer is a device that measures wind speed. If you need such a device for research, you do not have to buy it in a store - you can make it yourself from scrap materials, and then read the anemometer readings using a computer via a USB interface. To build a simple meter, you need materials that can be found in every home.

Instructions

Step 1

Prepare the components for the meter - two ping-pong balls, a piece of plexiglass, a ballpoint computer mouse, 3 cm of 2.5 mm copper wire, a ballpoint pen rod, a cable clip, a hollow brass barrel, and a plastic lollipop stick.

Step 2

Take a brass barrel and solder three 1 cm pieces of copper wire to it. Solder each wire to the barrel at a 120-degree angle. Cut the plastic lollipop tube into three pieces, 2 cm each, and then cut both table tennis balls in half.

Step 3

Attach the halves of the balls with strong glue to the pieces of the chupa chups tube. Additionally, you can reinforce the structure with small screws.

Step 4

Slide the tubes with half balls onto the wires that you soldered to the brass barrel. To prevent the structure from falling apart, secure it with glue.

Step 5

Now take the metal rod from the ballpoint pen and insert the encoder from the computer mouse into its lower part. Install the rod into the bearing so that it turns freely and does not fall out of the structure.

Step 6

You can strengthen the structure with a few drops of solder. The advantage of the encoder in the meter assembly over other motors is its high accuracy in data transmission.

Step 7

After the core of the rod and encoder is connected to the ball-and-tube impeller you assembled above, test and calibrate your meter against that of a laboratory anemometer.
