Lapti - low footwear, common in the old days in Russia. They were made from the bast of trees such as linden and elm. For strength, the sole was braided with a rope, vine, or hemmed with leather. They tied the bast shoes to the leg with laces, which were also twisted from the same bast that was used in the manufacture of the bast shoes themselves. However, sandals are not forgotten, and in our time they also continue to weave, but not for everyday wear, but out of interest.
Instructions
Step 1
Use bast as a material, which is harvested from the bark of young lindens. For bast shoes you need four strips of bast. First you need to weave the heel and insole. Take two strips in your left hand and two in your right hand. Weave them together in the middle of the length. Pass the upper ends of the strips down.
Step 2
Fold and interlace the remaining top left and right strips. Turn the resulting bast shoe back over. Find the two middle strips of bast on both sides. Braid the left and right corners alternately between the two middle bark strips. Start weaving the sole of the bast shoe.
Step 3
Fold the uppermost strip on the left and weave. Then weave one strip on the right. Now tackle the second strip on the left and also on the right until you have weave 5 strips. Turn the workpiece over.
Step 4
Determine which bast shoe you make first - left or right. For the left leg, select the uppermost belt strip on the right, for the right leg, on the left. For the left foot bast, braid the corner on the right side. Flip over and weave the belt strip further between the other strips. Start weaving the top of the bast shoe.
Step 5
Weave the first strips of the top of the bast shoe. Weave three strips on each side. Fold and weave the first mid-level strip out of the bast shoe towards the sole. Next, weave a strip-belt on the sole of the bast shoe.
Step 6
Fold and interlace the second and subsequent strips in the same way. In the same way, weave the right bast shoe, braiding the belt strip on the left.
