The legend about the origin of the carnation is very sad and tragic. The ancient Greek goddess Artemis failed in the hunt and was very annoyed. When she met a young man playing waxwings, she thought that it was music that scared away all the animals. The poor shepherd tried to justify himself, but the relentless Artemis tore out his eyes, but later threw them to the ground, unable to bear a plaintive look. Two red carnations have grown from them, resembling innocent blood spilled in color. But despite the ancient Greek myth, the carnation is very popular; it can be presented for any occasion, either separately or in a bouquet with other flowers. Or you can draw it on a postcard and please a person with a homemade surprise that will remind you of your donor for a long time.

Instructions
Step 1
Sketch the bud by drawing a circle divided into four equal segments. Draw a smooth line from the circle, intersecting with another shorter strip - this will be a blank for the future stem and leaves.
Step 2
In the middle of the circle, start drawing the jagged petals, at the initial stage they should be approximately the same size and shape. Draw the small leaves and sepals of the carnation.
Step 3
Add more petals with jagged frills, but try not to go too far beyond the circumference. Make sure that the carnation is fluffy, all its petals should be grouped in several layers. Do not forget to thicken the stem of the flower, which gradually changes its thickness. So, the thick lower part becomes thin near the inflorescence.
Step 4
Carefully erase the outlines of the circle and markings, and then more clearly outline the contours of the drawing.
Step 5
Get started painting the carnation using watercolors to help recreate the smooth color transition. But for more intense shades, you can also use gouache.
