In ancient times, the ability to sew a blanket from the remnants of fabric was highly valued. The main thing for achieving an excellent result is accuracy and impeccable precision in the execution of every detail.

It is necessary

  • - 288 square patches with a side of 8 cm;
  • - 1.60 m by 1.20 m of lining fabric;
  • - 1, 60 m by 1, 20 m of batting for laying;
  • - 50 cm of fabric with a width of 1, 20 m for stitching;
  • - pins;
  • - white mercerized thread;
  • - iron.

Instructions

Step 1

Assemble the front of the bedspread: choose a patch of fabric in a color that matches your design. Smooth out the original fabric thoroughly and cut 288 8cm square shreds.

Step 2

Sew the shreds in pairs, folding them right sides and stepping back from the edge of 5 mm (make a 5 mm allowance for the seam further throughout the work). Smooth the seams together on one side. Make blocks of four patches by sewing the pairs together. Before joining pairs of stitched patches together, pin the center seams of the pairs with a pin so that the squares are perfectly even (you should get 72 blocks).

Step 3

Sew a row of 8 blocks, press all seams to one side, for example to the right. In the second row, press the seams to the left. Stitch all nine rows in the same way, smoothing the seams in different directions.

Step 4

Stitch the rows in succession, smoothing the seams down each time.

Step 5

Take a lining fabric, iron it out, cut out a rectangle of the specified size, place it face down on a flat surface, spread the batting on top and straighten out any folds or bumps. On top, lay the front part of the coverlet face up, straighten and smooth all three layers. Make sure that the cuts of the front part and the batting with lining lie strictly parallel to each other.

Step 6

Pin all three layers: start pinning from the center of the rectangle up, down, right and left, then with a lattice across the entire surface. Leave a 20-15 cm distance between the pins.

Step 7

Tie the bedspread: take a needle with a white mercerized thread, pierce the blanket in the center from the front side, pull the thread, leaving 5 cm of the free end, withdraw the needle in the adjacent patch, close to the first puncture, make another stitch, introducing the needle into the same punctures, leave 5 cm of the second free end of the thread.

Step 8

Make two knots from the free ends, pull together in the same way all the points where the four pieces converge.

Step 9

Sew the bedspread: first stitch the cuts at a distance of 3 cm from the edges on the front side. Trim the lining and batting to leave 1.5 cm from the edge of the front side. Cut four strips 6 cm wide, 1, 20 m long.

Step 10

Fold the strips right-side in half-length and press flat, then fold 5 mm along one long side to the wrong side. Pin the piping to the bedspread, folding them right over to match the raw edges. Also pin the piping to the opposite side of the coverlet.

Step 11

Stitch the seam strips to both sides, fold them over the edge onto the lining, and smooth the seam. Sew the folded hem to the lining with a blindstitch. Cut off the end edges of the piping to 3 mm.

Step 12

Stitch the piping strips to the two remaining sides in the same way, leave 5 mm on the end side of the strips, fold them onto the lining side, fold and hem with a blind stitch.
