Worms are a favorite bait for many fishermen. They are easy to obtain and transport. But worms quickly die in unfavorable conditions. How to save them before fishing? There are several methods that differ in the length of time that worms can be stored.

Step 1
To preserve the worms for several days, they must be placed in a metal jar, which is undesirable to keep in the sun or expose to the wind. The sun and wind will dry out and spoil the worms. Long-term storage in a tin can will cause the worms to develop a metallic odor that will suppress the fish's appetite. The can must have a sufficient number of holes in the bottom and lid. Do not allow water to enter the jar while fishing. After you have removed some bait worms, place the jar in the shade.
Step 2
You can save the worms for two weeks by placing them in a box. The best material for the box is wood. You can also put the worms in a bag made of thick dyed fabric. Pre-dip the bag in water and then wring it out. For the best preservation of the worms, put some damp moss and leaves in a box or bag. If the moss is difficult to find, replace it with the soil from which the worms were taken. The worms should not be in contact with each other. Dryness and excessive moisture are equally harmful to them. During the rain, so that the worms do not crawl, they are stored in a dry place. They feed the worms with dormant tea or liquid food residues.
Step 3
When fishing, worms can be stored in a hole dug in the ground, the size of which depends on the number of worms and their shelf life. In a standard pit, measuring 0.5x0.5 m, up to two hundred worms can be stored within a month. To prevent the worms from spreading, the bottom of the pit is lined with a net, it is advisable to take a fine-mesh net. It will allow excess water to pass through and maintain the required moisture in the pit. Oilcloth is not suitable for these purposes, as it retains moisture. The hole must be filled with earth from the place where the worms dug up. You can feed the worms with tea leaves, coffee grounds, or oatmeal. After filling in the worms and distributing them throughout the pit, cover it with a net, sprinkle it with earth and tamp it tightly along the edges.
