Perhaps the lantern most accurately reflects a particular era. Lanterns that dimly illuminate a narrow street of an old town cannot be confused with those that illuminate modern flyovers or wide highways lined with skyscrapers. Whether you are planning to paint a cityscape, a Christmas card, an illustration for a fairy tale, or a decorative element for a home show, decide which lantern will work best for your picture.

Instructions
Step 1
The lantern can be hung from a pole or from a bracket attached to the building. If you are drawing it on a pillar, lay the sheet vertically. For a lantern attached with a bracket to the wall, the horizontal position of the sheet is preferable.
Step 2
Start by sketching a pole or bracket. If it is a pillar, find the middle of the bottom edge of the sheet and draw a vertical centerline. Mark the approximate ratio of the height of the pole and the dimensions of the lantern. Draw a thin horizontal line enclosing the bottom of the lantern. Draw two lines at a short distance from each other, parallel to the centerline.
Step 3
If the lantern is hanging from the bracket, determine the position of the suspension. In this case, too, draw a vertical centerline through the midpoints of the top and bottom sides of the sheet. Then, from a point just above the middle of the side edge of the sheet, draw a horizontal line until it intersects with the centerline. This will be the top edge of the bracket. From its end point, descend along the axial by a few centimeters and from here mark down the height of the lantern.
Step 4
Divide the height of the lantern into 4 parts. On the lower part there are 2 parts, the very ones where the light comes from. 1/4 each - lantern cover and suspension. Draw a dewlap. To do this, draw an isosceles triangle, the obtuse angle of which is at the top of the lantern. The height of this triangle is approximately equal to half of the distance allotted for the suspension. From the bottom line of the triangle, draw 2 straight lines to the top line of the lid. The lines should be at a short distance from each other.
Step 5
Draw the cover for the lantern. Draw perpendiculars to the centerline in both directions. Set aside a segment to the right, approximately equal to half the height of the lantern, and to the left - 2 times shorter. From the end of the second segment, draw a line of the same length, slightly at an angle upward.
Step 6
From a point on the centerline, which marks the midpoint of the height of the lantern, draw lines parallel to the one just drawn. In this case, the line going to the right should be slightly longer than the corresponding topline. It is slightly longer and should be on the left side. Connect the ends of both lines. Continue the line to the left at the same angle as the top line of the lid. Make it a little longer and also connect to the end of the top line. It turns out that the lantern hangs to you at an angle.
Step 7
Draw the bottom of the lantern. Draw 3 converging straight lines downward from the points on the bottom line of the lid. Lead them to the intersection with the bottom line of the lantern. Circle the bottom line between the intersection points.
Step 8
Color in the lantern. A yellow or white lantern looks spectacular on a dark background. If you are painting on black or dark blue paper, use gouache. But the sheet can be tinted. Leave the lantern as it is with white space around it, and fill the rest of the sheet with dark blue or black paint.
Step 9
Paint the cover of the lantern with light gray, bronze or greenish paint. Paint the post or bracket the same color. In the center of the lantern, leave the lightest spot - the lamp. Apply paint from the center to the edges, leaving more unpainted space with each layer.
Step 10
Trace the edges of the lantern with a thin brush with darker paint or wax crayon. Draw a pattern on the bracket with wax crayon. You can do without a pattern, leaving only straight lines, but the style of the era is better felt in the little things. For example, draw curls that decrease in size from the wall towards the lantern.
