Writing and publishing books for children and youth has its own characteristics. Increased requirements are imposed on such a literary work: the book must be well illustrated, the font must correspond to the child's perception capabilities, and so on. If you decide to publish a work for children, you will have to thoroughly prepare it.
Instructions
Step 1
After the manuscript of the book is ready, choose a publisher that will undertake to release the work. Use the advice of friends to find a publisher, including those who already have experience with publishers. You can also find a list of publishers close to you geographically by reference books, as well as by searching the Internet.
Step 2
Having chosen several publishers, contact them with a request to provide you with the terms of publication and, if possible, a sample contract that you have to conclude. Compare the terms and conditions and choose the most suitable offer.
Step 3
Be prepared to pay all or part of your publishing and printing services, unless you are already an established children's writer. It may very well be that later the terms of the contract may be revised in your favor, everything will depend on your abilities and creative results.
Step 4
If you feel the strength to prepare a work for printing, that is, to subtract possible errors, make layout using the simplest computer programs, draw up a title, cover, then do it all yourself. Otherwise, you will have to find specialists who can do this work for a reasonable fee.
Step 5
Pay special attention to the graphic and artistic design of the future book. For a child who picks up your work, this factor will be very important. High-quality illustrations that match the content and your creative ideas can attract the attention of the future reader from the very first pages. The cost of cooperation with an artist who has experience in designing publications for children will pay off in the future.
Step 6
Calculate the upcoming costs of publishing the book in advance. They will depend on the volume of the work, the circulation, the type of cover, the quality of the paper, the amount of paints used. The cost of production of the book will also be influenced by the prepress of the publication. A children's book printed on glossy coated paper with color illustrations and embossed hardcover is about five times more expensive than paperback, newsprint and black-and-white artwork.
Step 7
After you have decided on the technical parameters of the publication, submit the manuscript or the finished layout of the book to the publisher. Fill out the terms of cooperation with an agreement, having carefully read its details. If you took over the editor's job, then with a normal typesetting, the publication of your children's book will take about one to two months.
