If you decide to make an electric bike yourself, then the best option is to purchase a ready-made kit. In this case, you only need to know the size of the bicycle wheel, because the set will include an electric motor already installed on the wheel. The size can be found on the label on the tire. The most common size is 26.

Electric motor

Manufacturers offer motors that vary in power. There are usually three options: 1kW, 500W, 380 and 250W. It is recommended to choose an average value - 380 or 500 W. It should be noted that in a number of countries there is a power limitation - up to 250 watts. A stronger motor does not give a particularly noticeable increase in speed, but it will pull better uphill. The kit includes a motor assembled and installed on the rim, and you just have to put on the camera with the tire. When installing, make sure that the wires come out on the left side, otherwise the wheel will rotate in the other direction. And one more nuance: when installing the wheel, insulate the exposed bare wires in advance - if they touch the "ground", then even with accidental rotation, a short circuit will occur and the motor sensor will fail.

Electrical equipment

The most important thing here is the battery. It can supply 48, 36, 24 or 12 volts. Next, pay attention to the capacity (current) of the battery: the larger it is, the less often you will have to charge the battery, but its mass will also be greater. For example, a 10-ampere battery lasts 25 km, and a 50-ampere battery is enough for 50. But the latter weighs 16 kg, the first - 8. The second, no less important element of electrical equipment is the controller. Usually it is fixed to the frame. To fasten the wires (so as not to dangle), use a plastic strip (something like a clamp). There is also a nuance here: some controllers do not allow speeds above 25 km / h due to restrictions in the legislation of a particular country.

Control system

We'll have to replace the brake levers, because they have a special contact that turns off the electric motor when braking. However, you can replace, for example, only the front brake, and leave the rear one as it was. Set the throttle on the left stick and the headlight in the center. In its body there is usually a signal, the "ignition switch". The LEDs show the battery charge level, the inclusion of the electric motor. Some kits have a pedal sensor. If installed, the motor will turn on as soon as you start pedaling.
