Long skirts made of chiffon or silk came into fashion a couple of seasons ago. A flowing material, a romantic look - just what you need for warm summer weather. But it is not always possible to buy a suitable model. Then try to sew a long skirt to the floor yourself.

Skirt materials

In order to independently make a long skirt, great skill is not required. All you need is fabric, a measuring tape, tailor's chalk, matching threads, a zipper or elastic, a sewing machine and an overlock. If the latter is not available, you can take the cut fabric for processing with the nearest atelier or fabric store.

Opt for a simple cut of the skirt. The easiest way is to sew the product from two or four wide gussets. The waist can be made with an elastic band or with a zipper. The easiest option is with an elastic band. This will not hurt the chiffon style at all.

Long skirt sewing process

First of all, measure your parameters: OT (waist circumference), OB (hip circumference) and the length of the product. Then purchase a fabric. For sewing, with a width of 150 cm, you will need two lengths of the main fabric and a little less than the lining one (so that the lining does not look out from under the chiffon). For example, if the estimated length of the product is 110 cm, then you need to buy the main fabric: 110 cm x 2 + 3 cm (for the hem) + 7 cm (for the belt) = 230 cm. Lining: 100 x 2 + 3 cm (for hem) = 203 cm.

Make a simple pattern of one wedge - ¼ of the entire skirt. All wedges will be the same. To do this, divide OB by 8. On tracing paper, Whatman paper or drawing paper, draw a straight line equal to the length of the product + 0.5 cm. From the top edge, count in any direction the result equal to OB / 8 + 0.5 cm, put a point and draw from it parallel to the first straight line.

Then choose the flare angle of your future skirt. If you want to make it very lush, then choose an angle of about 25-30 degrees, and if it is of medium splendor, then a sharper one - 10-15 degrees. Note that the larger the angle, the wider the hem of the skirt. Make sure that the width of the bottom edge of the product does not exceed 3/5 of the width of the canvas. If you want to sew a very wide and fluffy product, then you will have to buy fabric for 4 product lengths.

At the chosen angle, draw a straight line downward for a distance equal to the length of the skirt. Then draw 0.5 cm from the first vertical (median) line downward. Using a piece, connect the resulting point with the starting point of the second straight line. You will get the waist line. Do the same with the lower points. Repeat all the steps in a mirror image from the first straight line. You will receive one of four skirt gussets.

Wash, dry and iron both fabrics. After that, cut 4 pieces of the main skirt and 4 pieces of the lining according to the pattern. The middle line of the pattern should be in line with the thread of the fabric. Cut the belt out of the chiffon. Its length should be equal to OB + 4 cm, and its width should be 6-7 cm. It depends on the size of the elastic and your preferences.

Overlock the edges of all pieces and sew side seams from the chiffon and lining gusset. Finish the hem of the skirt and petticoat. Fold both parts, wrong sides together, and stitch the top edges together on the right side in large steps.

Sew the edges of the belt together to form a circle, and stitch to the skirt. Slip a wide elastic into the waistband and sew in the middle with a medium step. Sew satin loops on the sides of the waistband from the inside out for easy storage on the hanger.

Your product is ready. May it please you and those around you.
