Curtains and drapes are an integral element of the interior, emphasizing its style and bringing comfort to your home. In order to order or sew beautiful curtains on your own, you need to take measurements by which you will calculate the amount of fabric required for their sewing. Taking measurements depends on the shape of your window and on the style of curtains that you plan to hang on the windows, as well as on the height of the cornice, which should already be fixed at the desired distance above the window.

Step 1
Measure the distance from the eaves hook to the floor in several places to make sure the eaves are fixed parallel to the floor and the curtains will not bend. If you want the curtains to rise slightly above the floor, measure the distance of that rise and subtract it from the original number. To determine the width of the curtain fabric, measure the distance between the outermost hooks of the curtain rod.
Step 2
Then, if the curtain has a fairly large pattern, and the curtain fabric is thick, multiply the width of the curtain rod by one and a half. The thinner and softer the fabric of the curtain and the finer the pattern, the more fabric you will need in width. If you multiply the width of the cornice by two or more, you get beautiful and lush folds.
Step 3
Depending on the shape of the cornice and window, measurements can be complicated - if you plan to make curtains in the shape of an arch, set several height points - upper and lower, and also measure the distance from each point to the floor.
Step 4
Also consider the standard width and height of the curtain fabrics. As a rule, the height of the purchased curtain fabric is 2.80 m. In accordance with the desired number of folds and gathers, as well as the presence or absence of curtain tape, choose the width of the fabric. Always buy fabric with a 10-20 cm margin for seams on each side.
Step 5
If you want to sew a Roman or Japanese curtain, measure the exact width of each fabric panel, then measure the height to the floor and add seam allowances. If the curtain fabric you have chosen has a pronounced pattern, buy fabric with a margin so that you can fit the pattern.
