The rhythm guitar, along with the bass guitar and drum kit, is part of the rhythm section, that is, instruments that perform rhythm-harmonic parts. At the same time, neither in form nor in quality can the rhythm guitar be inferior to the solo guitar - it's all about setting up the effects and correct sound production.

Instructions

Step 1

Adjust the volume. The rhythm guitar should be audible, but should not overpower the lead guitar and other instruments. If you set the volume correctly, there will be an even background in the background of the musical fabric.

Step 2

Use the muting technique - with the edge of your hand, reduce the vibration of the strings at the level of the pickups or a little closer to the saddle. Do not squeeze, otherwise there will be no sound at all, but do not relax either: loud chords will interrupt the melodic parts, in which up to two or three sounds simultaneously sound against your six.

Step 3

When playing rhythm guitar, a pick is actively used. It allows you to pluck the strings firmly and evenly. Alternate the top and bottom beats according to the composer's requirement or your own common sense. Try to follow the logic of the piece: if you need to play a chord at the same time, drag your pick along the strings sharply; if arpeggio is indicated, pluck the strings one by one according to the part.

Step 4

Use neutral voices and a minimum of effects. With rare exceptions, you do not need croaks and other decorations that are more suitable for solo performances. Whenever possible, switch to a "clean" sound, without distortion, but do not abuse it either: otherwise, a serious, aggressive piece risks turning into a lyrical romance.
