When a painting by a great artist makes a strong impression on you, you strive to share your emotions, tell your loved ones about it. To be understood correctly, you need to describe the picture in detail, adhering to a specific narrative plan.
Instructions
Step 1
Remember and tell us what you know about the life and work of the artist. Briefly describe the historical era and features of his home country. Indicate the main milestones in the life of the painter, his creative achievements and special contribution to the development of art. List the most famous works of the master.
Step 2
Indicate the genre of the painting, note the technique of execution and other artistic features of the painting. Clarify how typical it is for a particular artist. Perhaps you want to talk about the only self-portrait in the creative biography of a fairy tale illustrator.
Step 3
Tell us about the plot of the picture. Briefly state its main topic, what it is about. Note whether the painting is associated with certain historical events, whether it is a continuation of any significant theme in the artist's work, whether it evokes associations with literary sources. Determine what exactly the painter was trying to express.
Step 4
Analyze the features of the composition of the picture. Pay special attention to what is shown in the foreground and what the author has assigned to the background. Describe in detail the various details: the number of characters in the picture, their poses, emotions, the presence of the main and secondary characters, their interaction with each other. Tell us how detailed the general background of the picture is, whether additional details have been introduced to support the main idea.
Step 5
Draw a connection between the plot and the color scheme of the picture, think about the effect the artist wanted to achieve using these particular tones. Do not disregard how the artist has placed light accents on the canvas.
Step 6
Describe the innovations applied by the artist in this painting. Here we can talk about plot structures that have no analogues among contemporaries, and about the nuances of the author's artistic manner.
Step 7
Express your own impression of the painting. Explain exactly how she touched you, what thoughts she prompted, what memories and associations she evoked. If your opinion does not coincide with the reaction of critics, explain why you perceived the picture in this way and not otherwise.
