In the oriental martial arts, a wide variety of auxiliary shells are used, on which students train their martial skills. In the martial art of Wing Chun, a special wooden dummy is used as a training projectile. If you want to train anywhere, regardless of the gym, you can make one with your own hands, saving you a lot of money that you would have spent on buying a new dummy.

Step 1
Start by choosing the right wood for your mannequin. Pine, birch, oak and poplar are best suited for this. Based on the different properties of each type of wood, you can choose different woods for different parts of the mannequin. For example, for the main log, you can take any tree that is well dried and does not have cracks.
Step 2
For heavily stressed arms and legs, use oak, maple, ash or elm, which are highly durable materials. Make the mannequin support frame from flexible and durable wood - oak, elm or ash.
Step 3
If you were unable to purchase a fully dried log for the main body of the mannequin, dry the log yourself. This can be either atmospheric drying in the shade under a canopy, in which the ends of the logs are covered with a chalk solution or impregnated with hot linseed oil, or a drying chamber. Atmospheric drying is too long, so it is best to use a special chamber to dry the log or purchase already dried material.
Step 4
So, as the main element of the mannequin, you will need a wooden pole with a diameter of 20-25 cm and a height of 150 to 190 cm. You will also need two arms, a middle arm and a leg. As a frame, use two beams that go through the holes in the top and bottom of the post and are fixed on perpendicular rectangular posts.
Step 5
First, process the wooden post, giving it a perfect cylindrical shape with the same diameter along its entire length. Remove bark and branches, trim away bumps and protruding areas. Bring the log to the desired shape using an electric planer. Sand the post with coarse sandpaper, protecting the respiratory system with a respirator.
Step 6
Then sand the post with fine sandpaper, smoothing its surface, and polish it with a rough cloth or felt. Having finished with the main post, move on to making the arms and legs of the mannequin. The easiest way to act as hands is to install sturdy wooden sticks and secure them securely in the holes in your body. The mannequin's leg, bent at the knee, is made of an iron pipe and wrapped around with a cable or any rope. Also, the leg can be made from solid wood if you come across a tree of the desired shape.
Step 7
Make sure that your hands are correctly positioned relative to your body. There should not be too much horizontal angle between the upper arms and they should be at the same height. Fasten the left hand higher than the right and, inserting it into the hole in the body, tilt it down. The right hand should be raised up. Fasten the middle hand below, in a horizontal position. Cover the finished mannequin with stain and varnish, and paint if necessary.
