Venice is one of the most beautiful and unique cities in the world, located in the northeastern part of Italy on the islands of the shallow lagoon of the Adriatic Sea. The city irresistibly attracts a huge number of tourists.
Venice is a city on the water, which abounds in historical and architectural monuments of world importance. Even those people who have never been to Venice have probably heard about the famous Venetian glass and the equally famous Venetian lace. Glass workshops have long been located on one of the remote islands of the lagoon - Murano. And the inhabitants of another island - Burano became famous for lace-making. According to an old legend, when Saint Martin appeared on this island, his elegant clothes were adorned with the finest sea-foam collar. Apparently, this legend inspired local needlewomen to create wonderful lace.
About 4,000 people live on the island of Burano. Its architecture is very beautiful, peculiar, somewhat different from the main part of Venice. There are only two or three storey low houses, but they are very brightly colored. On the island, there is a museum of Venetian lace and the Church of St. Martin with a 52-meter-high inclined bell tower. Tourists come there specially to admire these sights.
And in the second half of September each year they are attracted by a colorful spectacle - the Burano regatta. She starts at the island of Saint Erasmus and finishes at Burano, with both men and women participating in the races. Men compete on two-oared gondolas, and the fair sex - on special boats, which in Venice are called mascheretes. There is no strictly defined date for the ceremony, the organizers are guided, first of all, by the weather, because it is dangerous to hold it in a strong wind and excitement.
This event is extremely popular with the Venetians, huge crowds of spectators pour out onto the embankments, frantically supporting the participants of the regatta. Foreign tourists also watch this spectacle with great pleasure, having received another reason to enjoy the unique atmosphere of Venice, and at the same time visit the island of Burano itself.
