If you want to paint a bright, juicy drawing, filled with the energy of light and shimmering with the finest shades of color, oil pastels are perfect for you. Such special properties are given to this paint by wax and oil. Oil pastels can be used in a variety of techniques to achieve amazing effects.
It is necessary
A sheet of white paper for sketches in oil measuring 55 * 80 cm, oil pastels, turpentine or white spirit, brush No. 5, cloth
Instructions
Step 1
Sketch the outline of the composition. Draw the general outlines of the composition on a piece of paper. Use for each of its elements the corresponding pastel color: yellow ocher for the outlines of the paper, grassy green and lemon yellow for stems and leaves, carmine, cobalt and purple for flowers and black for stamens. Hold the pastel stick loosely, without tension, and try to draw outlines with quick, smooth lines.
Step 2
Shade brown paper. At this stage of the work, create separate color spots. Take yellow ocher and apply quick light strokes to the paper the flowers are wrapped in. To keep the strokes from looking monotonous and mechanical, hold the pastel stick loosely, without tension. Gradually, against this background, the outlines of flowers will begin to appear more and more clearly, folding into a general composition.
Step 3
Improve your drawing. Take a dark gray pastel and draw the outlines of the white flowers. Add some more intense gray strokes to these flowers to emphasize their outline. Now we can finally say that you have created the main areas of color, and you did it in the best traditions of impressionism.
Step 4
Continue mixing paints. It is important that the brush remains clean throughout the entire work. To do this, dry the brush thoroughly with a cloth each time before spreading the next pastel. Start mixing colors on the flower heads. In the process, you will find that oil pastels are very easy to dilute. Continue working, still not trying to cover the entire surface of the flower head with the wash. Let the bottom layer of shading show through in places through the diluted pastels. Mark the whole drawing in this way.
Step 5
Paint the details with black pastels. Let the drawing dry completely, then add some crisp details. Take black oil pastels and lightly paint the cores of the flowers. These stamens will create a rhythmic repeating pattern that guides the viewer's eyes across the surface of the painting. Surround the cores of the flowers with black stamen dots.
Step 6
Refine the color. Add touches of cobalt and purple pastels to the purple flowers. Paint the leaves with grassy green, and paint over the shaded areas of the leaves with dark green pastels. These dark areas will add dimension to the design and help depict the free space between the stems, flowers, and wrapping paper. Apply bright lemon yellow highlights to the flower stems.
Step 7
Final touches. Deepen shadows in the background and in the gaps between flowers and leaves. These negative spaces will help to unify the composition and will guide the viewer's eye across the entire surface of the painting. In addition, shadows will allow you to more accurately show the shape of each individual flower.
