Bamboo is an ideal material for making wind instruments. It is hollow inside. The stem of this plant has natural partitions, so there is no need to make a cork. In addition, bamboo does not need to be specially dried. Craftsmen even make saxophones from this plant, and a great variety of flutes have been invented. The most common bamboo flute can be made by hand.
It is necessary
- - bamboo stem;
- - a long metal rod with a diameter of just over 1 cm;
- - gas burner or fire;
- - jigsaw;
- - drill;
- - ruler;
- - a mitten or a piece of rag;
- - linseed oil.
Instructions
Step 1
Find a suitable bamboo stem. This plant can be grown in your country house or even on the windowsill, and very quickly. An old bamboo rod or a piece of curtain will work as well, if it is made from long enough stems. The diameter can be from 2 to 2.5 cm. It's okay if the flute is a little thicker or a little thinner.
Step 2
Cut a piece of bamboo about half a meter long. The hardness of bamboo is legendary, so it is best to saw it off with a jigsaw with the smallest file. Saw off so that there is a natural cork at one end.
Step 3
Mark the first, it is the blown hole. To do this, from the end where the natural cork is located, measure with a ruler 2, 5-2, 55 cm. It is most convenient to make marks with a regular marker. Measure 15-20 cm from the resulting mark on the same side and make another mark. From it, retreat the same distance as between the plug and the first hole, and put a third point. Make 4 more marks. The distances between them must be equal. There should be 7 marks in total.
Step 4
Get rid of unnecessary partitions. Most likely, there is not one natural cork in the bamboo pipe, but 2-3. You only need one that covers the flute from the end. Do this with a heated steel bar. In a flute made of other materials, the entire inner part is burned out in this way, here it is necessary to remove only the fibrous plugs. Heat the rod red-hot on a gas burner or over a fire. Hold the other end with an oven mitt. It is best to use an oven mitt for this.
Step 5
Drill holes. It is better to do this simply with a drill with a diameter of slightly more than 0.6 cm. In this case, you should not use an electric drill, the bamboo will crack. A hand drill can be used, but turn the handle slowly and carefully. The drill also needs to be red-hot. A potholder will not help much in this case, so use pliers.
Step 6
Sand the inside of the flute with coiled fine sandpaper. Sandpaper can be used to wrap, for example, a bicycle knitting needle or a long knitting needle. Expand the inner diameter of the flute if necessary. Remove any burnt areas around the holes.
