Joining is the laying of bricks or tiles not tightly to each other, but at a small interval. The resulting gap is filled with cement mortar. The jointing makes the masonry more dense and waterproof, and improves the appearance of the building.
Instructions
Step 1
The owners of old buildings with brick walls are often interested in whether it is possible to make a jointing in their case. To grout old brick walls, clean off the old mortar using different file shapes and chisels. Then prepare the walls, remove all the dirt from them. To clean the walls, use a high-pressure water jet to clean dirt.
Step 2
Prime the joints with special primers. Be sure to add anti-fungal and anti-salt compounds to the mixture. Fill the joints with the prepared mortar. For a professional looking jointing and masonry, prepare a mortar of the desired consistency. If the grout is too wet, not crumbly enough, you will have to scrape the excess grout out of the joint. If the solution hardens quickly, then the work will be very difficult, and dark marks may appear on the seams.
Step 3
Check the consistency of the mortar by pressing your thumb on the seam. If there is a clear print, the solution does not stick to your finger, then you prepared it correctly. Do not mix the entire solution at once, but prepare it as needed.
Step 4
There are several jointing joints: Trim the mortar off the wall with a trowel and scrub it with a stiff brush to expose the aggregate.
Step 5
To obtain a concave seam, cut the mortar flush with the surface, and then draw along the seam with jointing. Such a seam is suitable for walls made of old bricks, where it is no longer possible to make a jointing with a clear edge.
Step 6
On a wall made of new bricks, it is worth making a seam with two bevels. It not only looks neat, but also saves from rainwater. If you make a rectangular seam, then remove the mortar from the seam with a metal or wooden object to a depth of 6 mm, then compact it and slightly smooth the mortar with a rounded dowel or shingles. But you should not make this seam on the outer walls, since it does not drain water well.
Step 7
A single bevel seam is very good at withstanding our harsh climatic conditions. In this case, make the joining with a pointed small trowel. Finish all seams with jointing, which looks like a table knife, the end of which is bent 90⁰.
