To edit images today, special computer programs are used - graphic editors. The most popular application of this class with very broad capabilities is Adobe Photoshop. Among the processing tools built into it, there are several such tools at once that will allow you to make a color image in black and white.

Instructions
Step 1
Open a graphics editor and load the file of the desired image into it. If a small lock icon is displayed in the Layers panel opposite the only line, it means that Photoshop considers the base layer of this file type to be background and by default prohibits editing. In this case, create a duplicate of the layer - press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + J.
Step 2
One way to make a picture black and white is to reduce the saturation of all colors to zero. Call such a tool by pressing Ctrl + U or using the Hue / Saturation item in the Correction subsection of the Image section in the Photoshop menu. The operation settings window contains three sliders - the middle one is responsible for the color saturation. Move the slider all the way to the left or enter the numeric value -100 in the box. You will see immediately how the images will look as a result of this action, and click OK to commit the changes.
Step 3
You can more accurately adjust the desaturation parameters using another tool - in the same subsection "Correction" of the "Image" section of the graphical editor menu, it is called "Black and White". You can also call the panel with the settings of this tool using the long keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + Alt + B.
Step 4
This method allows you to separately adjust the desaturation parameters of six shades. By moving the corresponding slider to the right, you will set the depth of black color to which the editor will convert this color shade. The changes made will also be displayed in the picture in real time, and to commit them, click the OK button.
Step 5
The third method is designed to automatically transform a color image into black and white without any preliminary settings. This tool is placed in the same subsection "Adjustments" of the "Image" section with the name "Desaturate". You can also apply it by pressing the key combination Ctrl + Shift + U.
Step 6
The final operation after using any of the described desaturation methods should be to save the edited image in any graphic format. Call the corresponding dialog using the Shift + Ctrl + S or Alt + Shift + Ctrl + S hotkeys.
