The beauty of the northern lights is remembered by everyone who has seen it at least once in their life. Unfortunately, it cannot be observed everywhere. But let this wonderful natural phenomenon remain at least on paper, because for this all you need is paints and a foam rubber swab.

Step 1
In this case, it is better to take a sheet of paper in black or dark blue. If there is no black paper that absorbs moisture sufficiently, you can tint a regular landscape sheet. To do this, dilute the black gouache. It is more convenient to tint with a piece of foam rubber, then the gouache lays down more evenly.
Step 2
Consider the picture. The northern lights are composed of multi-colored broken lines. They can be drawn without taking your hands off. Maybe you come across a picture where red and green flashes are diverging in circles around the North Star. You can draw such a northern lights, but then you have to try to make the end of the circle close with its beginning.
Step 3
See what color the flashes are in the picture and select the appropriate paints. Make foam swabs. To do this, just wrap a piece of foam rubber with a thread on a stick. You can take just pieces of foam rubber, but it is more convenient to draw vertical lines with tampons without touching the sheet with your hand.
Step 4
Rehearse the movement. Hold the swab in your hand just as you would normally hold a pencil or pen. In the air, draw a vertical line slightly at an angle to the horizon. At the top point, make a sharp zigzag and bring your hand down, also slightly at an angle. Zigzags should be densely spaced. And at the bottom to be closer to each other than at the top.
Step 5
Draw the first zigzag line on the sheet. Try to keep your hand free, without the slightest strain. Before drawing the second line, you can let the first drawing dry. Draw the second line so that the zigzags fall between the zigzags of the first line. At the same time, the paint should not be smeared.
Step 6
After you have made some white, green, and bright red zigzag lines, complete the drawing with single splashes in different parts of the drawing.
Step 7
You can also paint the northern lights on the wall of the room. And you don't need to buy any special paints for this. Just tint the wallpaper with black and paint the shine in the same way as on a small sheet, only you need to make large strokes.
