It may happen that the comfortable, well-fitting trousers are slightly longer than necessary. This unfortunate circumstance is not necessarily a reason to go to a sewing studio. You can also shorten your trousers at home.
It is necessary
- - pants;
- - sewing machine;
- - tailor's chalk or marker;
- - threads;
- - needles;
- - scissors;
- - tailor's pins.
Instructions
Step 1
Slip on your pants and tuck one of your legs to the desired length. To prevent the fabric from changing its position while you are evaluating the result, pin the folded part with a few tailor's pins. Once you've figured out how much you need to cut your pants, mark the fold with chalk or a marker pen.
Step 2
Spread out the pants on a flat surface and measure from the mark on the new fold to the bottom of the leg. To get an accurate measurement, measure the hem along one of the seams.
Step 3
On the wrong side of both legs, at the level of the new hem, draw lines parallel to the bottom. To do this, measure the amount by which you are going to shorten the trousers from the edge of the legs in several places, put dots and connect them in one line.
Step 4
Measure the width of the fabric folded down at the bottom of any factory leg. Step back from the drawn line by the resulting width down and draw another strip. Draw the third line, stepping back from the second half a centimeter down. The pants will be cut along the lowest strip.
Step 5
If you are not entirely sure of the accuracy of your own measurements, fold the pant legs along the very top line and baste the hem. By trying on the pants, you will be able to evaluate the preliminary result.
Step 6
Cut off a portion of the leg along the cut line. Overlock or zigzag the edge of the fabric if your sewing machine has this feature. You can manually overcast the cut with a buttonhole stitch.
Step 7
Fold in the legs half a centimeter inward and press the hem. If you did not use tailor's chalk in your work, but markers, fix the hem with a basting stitch, without using an iron. Some types of these markers will not wash off after heat treatment. Fold the fabric again to the top of the lines you have drawn, and baste the hem.
Step 8
Stitch on the hem with threads in the same color that was used to sew the cut-off leg. Trousers made of soft fabric can be hemmed with a blind seam that will not be visible on the right side.
Step 9
If you used water-soluble markers when marking, wash off the marks with water without soap or detergent.
